Metro breaks down in Istanbul, passengers left stranded
A metro train operating between Yenikapı and Kirazlı in Istanbul broke down in a tunnel. Passengers were left stranded in the vehicle for a period of time.
A metro train traveling toward Yenikapı on the M1B Yenikapı-Kirazlı Metro Line broke down inside a tunnel before reaching the Üçyüzlü station. The vehicle waited in the tunnel for a while, and passengers were unable to exit. When the metro later moved and arrived at the Üçyüzlü station, the automatic door system failed to engage.
Citizens were unable to get off the metro for minutes as the lights were off and the doors would not open. After some time, the passengers stranded on the metro were able to open the doors using the manual system and exit.
During this time, an announcement was made stating, "The vehicle will not be able to continue its journey due to a technical malfunction. It is kindly requested that no passengers remain on the vehicle."
A passenger who got off the broken-down metro reacted to the situation, saying, "We have been waiting here in the tunnel for 20 minutes. There is no electricity, nothing."
As the passengers emptied out of the train cars, congestion formed at the Üçyüzlü station, and citizens had difficulty boarding the subsequent metro trains.
