MHP expels two members over Ömer Halisdemir street name controversy
The MHP has expelled two municipal council members following a decision made by the Sulusaray Municipal Council regarding the 'Ömer Halisdemir Street'.
During the August municipal council meeting of the Sulusaray Municipality, a decision was made by a majority vote of the council members to rename the street bearing the name of the July 15 hero, Martyr Staff Sergeant Ömer Halisdemir, after Şahin Hasgül, who served as the district's mayor for four terms.
Following the widespread public outcry over the incident, the Tokat Governor's Office canceled the decision, stating: “The decision to change the name of 'Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Street' in the 4th item of the Municipal Council agenda has been canceled by the Governor's Office's letter dated 07.10.2023 and numbered 36364, and the name has been restored to its original state.”
MHP Deputy Chairman and Ankara MP Sadir Durmaz announced that the resignations of the two municipal council members in the Tokat–Sulusaray District Municipality had been requested.
In a written statement, Durmaz said, “The resignations of our two council members who voted in favor of the decision by the Tokat/Sulusaray District Municipal Council to change the name of the street bearing the name of the hero martyr of July 15, Staff Sergeant Ömer Halisdemir, have been obtained, and their ties with our party have been severed.”
