MHP's move against Facebook and WhatsApp: New closure suggestions from the MHP, which supports the blocking of Instagram

The social media platform Instagram, which was created primarily for sharing photos and status updates but has over time become one of the most important communication tools of the era, hosting over 2 billion users, has been blocked by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).

Eyes had turned to the statement from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) regarding the latest status of the social media platform, which was blocked in Turkey two days ago. However, the happy news expected by those waiting for Instagram to be reopened did not arrive.

Moreover, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) made a statement indicating that not only Instagram but also Facebook and WhatsApp should be shut down.

İsmail Özdemir, MHP Deputy Chairman in charge of Media, Communication and Digital Channels, who supports the blocking of the social media platform Instagram, stated that Facebook and WhatsApp also target national values and filed a complaint.

The statement by MHP Deputy Chairman İsmail Özdemir is as follows:

“About a month ago, I froze my personal Instagram account due to the abundance of security vulnerabilities, the sharing of collected data with third parties against the wishes and will of users, instant and ambient tracking, eavesdropping and monitoring, sharing location information without user consent, activities directed at Turkey that would affect our national security, and again, because it targets almost all values belonging to our nation.

Since a similar practice exists on Facebook and WhatsApp, which are integrated into the Meta infrastructure, I do not use these platforms as much as possible.

Furthermore, it is obvious that these same applications have an attitude that targets the values of the Nationalist Ülkücü Movement, Turkey's national values, and our common sensitivities as a nation, and that they do not even listen to the decisions of Turkish courts in this regard.

Finally, the attitude of Instagram, which applies in-program censorship to anyone who criticizes the genocidal criminal Israel, has been the final straw. It is impossible to accept these situations.

I will not personally use this application, namely Instagram, which targets the national and spiritual values of our people, until it acts with respect for Turkey's sensitivities. Otherwise, it will not be possible to protect our present and our children, who are our future.

On this occasion, I congratulate our Presidency's Directorate of Communications. A timely decision has been made regarding Instagram. The Directorate of Communications and the BTK have fulfilled the requirements of the responsibility they received from the constitution and have shown our national sensitivities; they have revealed the will that Turkey will not kneel on any issue against global dark centers and genocidal Israel, and that those who should kneel are those who earn billions of dollars through Turkey and the Turkish Nation and then insult this nation.

The issue is beyond being handled with a balance of freedoms and security; it is a matter of the survival, honor, and dignity of Turkey and the Turkish Nation. This must never be compromised.”
