MHP's Feti Yıldız on Selahattin Demirtaş's release: 'Some things need to be done'
Feti Yıldız, Deputy Chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Member of Parliament for Istanbul, has made a notable statement regarding the expectations for the release of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is currently imprisoned in Edirne Prison.
In his statement to CNN Türk regarding the matter, Yıldız said, "I am not familiar with the case. What I do know is that there are European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings. ECHR rulings are directly related to our constitution. Article 90 of our Constitution states that 'one must comply with international agreements that have been duly concluded.' Therefore, while Article 90 of the Constitution stands, I think that, of course, some things need to be done."
When asked, "Will there be a general amnesty?", Yıldız responded with the following:
"There are no conditions for a general amnesty in Turkey. There will be no general amnesty. However, there is a need for regulations regarding the reduction of sentences, the regulation of executions, and equality. We have said this before in Turkey. There are no conditions for a general amnesty in Turkey. There will be no general amnesty. However, there is a need for regulations regarding the reduction of sentences, the regulation of executions, and equality. A definitive step must be taken during this period."
DEMİRTAŞ'S LAWYER KARAMAN: IT WOULD BE SIGNIFICANT
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had previously issued a violation ruling regarding the application made for Selahattin Demirtaş, who has been imprisoned since 2016, stating that he was "imprisoned for political purposes."
Selahattin Demirtaş’s lawyer, Mahsuni Karaman, also stated in his remarks yesterday, pointing to the latest rights violation ruling by the ECHR, that the date of October 8, 2025, is critical.
Stating that "The Court of Appeal should immediately take the file under review and release Mr. Demirtaş and his colleagues as a requirement of the law," Karaman made the following remarks while calling for Demirtaş's release:
On the other hand, as a requirement for the credibility of the resolution process, which is being conducted with all its intensity and followed cautiously, the release of the Kobani detainees is necessary and even mandatory.
So much so that, just as the MHP did not appeal the Kobani file, it would be significant if the government also did not object to the ECHR ruling, for which the objection period expires on October 8, 2025. It is already established by the previous ECHR Grand Chamber ruling that similar objections would not find a response before the ECHR.
It should be noted that we have a strong expectation that the Court of Appeal will urgently review the Kobani file and issue a release decision for Mr. Demirtaş and his colleagues, both as a requirement of local and international law and to reinforce the credibility of the peace and brotherhood process.”
