Minister of National Education Tekin issues ultimatum to French schools
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that action will be taken against French schools that do not comply with regulations.
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that action will be taken against French schools that do not comply with regulations.
In his statement, Minister Tekin used the following expressions:
"Under normal circumstances, these schools are institutions that have no place in our legislation. If they enter into the legal framework, they will continue their education; if they do not, they are effectively non-existent. What we desire is to follow our legal regulations and the international agreements we have made with countries. For this reason, we want an international agreement to be signed so that these schools can attain a legal status.
THEY WARNED FRANCE BUT NO STEPS WERE TAKEN
We believe that these 12 schools, which lack a legal basis, will reach a ground where both countries agree through an international treaty. Our negotiations with France are ongoing. This is not a new issue. Since 1993, governments have warned France, but no steps have been taken."
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
Two schools providing education in Turkey and implementing the French curriculum had caused a dispute between the Ministry of National Education and the French Embassy, and the French Embassy in Ankara had issued a statement indicating that it was in constant communication with the Ministry of National Education.
Minister Tekin made a statement regarding the issue on July 13, noting that there are 12 foreign schools in Turkey and that there is no problem in line with the commitments made in the Treaty of Lausanne, and without naming them, he pointed to the Pierre Loti and Charles de Gaulle schools, emphasizing that Turkish students studying at these schools are not receiving education under the Turkish national curriculum.
