Minister Tekin's statement on private school fees: 'If there is an excessive increase, we launch an investigation'

Speaking to TRT Haber about security measures in schools, Tekin said, "I hope we do not experience such unpleasant incidents in the coming years. We have experienced them in our own country as well. The necessary processes are being carried out in these schools, and the harshest penalties will be imposed regarding this matter.

I sat down and talked with the Minister of Interior. Commission meetings are being held regarding security measures; we were already taking measures such as having police present in schools that carry security risks and having police vehicles patrol. We have taken steps to make these measures even stricter in the coming years. We are integrating the camera systems in our schools into the KGYS (City Security Management System). Law enforcement units will be able to monitor them through the cameras.

Some of our schools have high walls, others do not. Each school will have its own unique security system. A guidance support mechanism will be established for behaviors on gaming sites, which we are conducting in coordination with the police. A child of compulsory education age, which is 12 years, graduates at the age of 18.

Addressing criticisms regarding price increases in private schools, Tekin said, "As a ministry, we define a school for every child of school age. It is the nearest school within walking distance of their home. Our parents, for whatever reason, choose to enroll them in a private school, accepting that they will bear this economic burden.

From the salary the school pays its teachers to construction-related costs, every facility the school offers has a cost. The private school reports this to us. This is a private legal relationship between two parties. The parent says, 'I will not send my child to the school determined by the ministry, but to the one I want.' There are 12 thousand 500 private schools. How appropriate is it to publish and share the price list of 12 schools?

Yes, there are very expensive schools. There are schools that take children abroad in the summer. As a ministry, we have determined an increase at the rate of inflation after the contract is made between the parent and the school; if they do it, we monitor it. We then launch an investigation.

We want payments made between the parent and the school administration to be done electronically. They complain, saying, 'I also gave this much money in cash.' If a school makes an increase above inflation, the parent can file a complaint. Let us not cast suspicion on private schools as well. We have also introduced a requirement for textbooks.
