Minister Tekin’s statement on 'inappropriate attire': Investigation launched

Kocaeli’s Gebze district, some female students were not allowed into the area at a high school graduation ceremony held in the schoolyard on the grounds that they were wearing clothing that did not comply with the dress code.

As students and their families reacted to the school administration, a gendarmerie team was also dispatched to the area.

In a statement made by the Kocaeli Governor's Office, it was announced that 2 education inspectors had been assigned to conduct an investigation.

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin answered journalists' questions regarding the incident.

“I have a request from the media, politics, and NGOs. Instead of making such a big agenda out of a single negative incident within such a large family, I wish you would publicize the sacrifices our teacher colleagues have made throughout the year with the same sincerity and effort,” said Minister Tekin, adding, “When unwanted incidents occur, with a well-intentioned approach, the people in our ministry who can solve the problem should be informed first. I believe that making it media-focused in this way without seeking a solution is not very correct in terms of press ethics.”

Minister Tekin stated, “It is an incident we did not wish to see happen. As a Ministry, we will conduct the necessary investigations regarding those who were negligent or at fault in this matter.”
