Minister Uraloğlu responds to exorbitant hikes in internet packages
As reactions to the exorbitant hikes in internet packages continue, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has made a statement on the matter. Uraloğlu stated, "Operators are free to determine the tariffs they will apply for the services they offer to their subscribers, provided that they do not violate relevant legislation and BTK regulations."
Despite having some of the slowest internet in the world, the exorbitant hikes applied to tariffs are increasing rapidly.
Evaluating the issue, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu explained the hikes as a matter of "freedom."
Reminding of the legislation, the Minister stated, "Operators are free to determine the tariffs they will apply for the services they offer to their subscribers, provided that they do not violate relevant legislation and BTK regulations. Furthermore, the maximum fees that operators can charge consumers for certain service items are determined by the BTK through the Mobile Electronic Communication Services Maximum Fee Tariff. On the other hand, within the framework of the relevant legislation, the tariffs of operators determined to have Significant Market Power (SMP) as a result of market analyses conducted by the BTK regarding wholesale-level services (services offered by the operator with SMP to other operators) are subject to BTK approval."
CHP TAKES THE ISSUE TO PARLIAMENT
CHP Deputy Chairman Karasu brought the grievances of citizens to the agenda during the budget negotiations of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure at the TBMM Planning and Budget Committee. After the statements of Karasu, who emphasized that Turkey has some of the slowest internet in the world but is among the countries with high costs, Minister Uraloğlu stated in a television program he attended that Turkey is not where it wants to be in terms of average internet speed, and blamed Türk Telekom by saying, "The primary responsible party is Türk Telekom."
