On the eve of the Eid al-Adha holiday, which marks the beginning of the holiday period, 863 traffic accidents occurred across Turkey. While 10 people lost their lives in these accidents, 1,319 people were injured. Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya shared the grim picture with the public via social media.
In his statement on his social media account, Minister Yerlikaya reminded that the Eid al-Adha holiday had begun and stated that 863 traffic accidents occurred on the eve of the holiday. He stated that 10 citizens lost their lives at the scene of the accidents and 1,319 people were injured in various ways.
2.6 MILLION VEHICLES USED THE HIGHWAYS
Minister Yerlikaya used the following expressions:
"During the Eid al-Adha holiday, our police and gendarmerie traffic teams are taking the necessary precautions for the safety of our citizens and are continuing their inspections with great sensitivity. According to the data from our Ministry of Transport, 2 million 591 thousand 34 vehicles used the highways on the eve of the holiday. On the eve of the holiday, our traffic teams processed 23 thousand 275 of these vehicles for speed and radar violations.
The rate is 0.9 percent. I would like to thank each and every one of our drivers who comply with traffic rules by not speeding, which accounts for 99.1 percent. I sincerely believe that the remaining 0.9 percent will also act more carefully, will not speed, and will not risk their own lives, the lives of their loved ones, or the lives of innocent people. They, too, will join our 99.1 percent of drivers who follow the rules. Our inspections are not for the purpose of issuing penalties, but to prevent accidents and reduce our loss of life to zero. Let us follow traffic rules so that our holiday joy is not mixed with sorrow. Roads exist to reunite us with our loved ones, not to separate us."
