Interior Minister Yerlikaya stated in a post on his social media account that 309 irregular migrants were apprehended in "Kalkan" operations conducted in İzmir, primarily in the Basmane district, and provided the following information:
"Under the coordination of the İzmir Governorship, our Provincial Police Department and Provincial Directorate of Migration Management conducted road checks and inspections in areas where foreign nationals are likely to be concentrated, in abandoned buildings, parks and gardens, hotels, and on boulevards, avenues, and streets leading to these routes, as part of efforts to combat irregular migration and migrant smuggling across İzmir. In the operation carried out simultaneously with the participation of 1,257 police and Provincial Directorate of Migration Management personnel, the legal residency status of foreign nationals in our country and whether they were present in the province where they were registered were checked. Among the foreigners whose fingerprints were queried at 5 Mobile Migration Points deployed in various districts of the city, 309 were determined to be irregular migrants. Procedures for the deportation of the irregular migrants to their home countries have been initiated."
