Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, regarding UEFA's opening of a disciplinary investigation into national football player Merih Demiral, stated, "A historical and cultural symbol cannot be equated with racism.

In a post on his social media account, Yerlikaya made the following statements:

WHAT HAPPENED?

UEFA opened an investigation into Merih Demiral for "alleged inappropriate behavior" during the match in which the A National Football Team defeated Austria 2-1 in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship.

INVESTIGATION OPENED

In a statement made by UEFA, it was said, "An investigation has been opened in accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations regarding the alleged inappropriate behavior of Turkish Football Federation player Merih Demiral during the 2024 European Championship round of 16 match played between Austria and Turkey in Leipzig, Germany, on July 2, 2024."

Merih Demiral, who scored both goals for the national team against Austria to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, had made the wolf salute.
