Ministry of Interior suspends AKP mayor from office

The Ministry of Interior has announced that Ekmel Cönger, the Mayor of Keskin in Kırıkkale, has been suspended from office.

The statement issued by the Ministry of Interior is as follows:

"Kırıkkale province Keskin Mayor Ekmel CÖNGER has been suspended from office by the Ministry of Interior as a temporary measure in accordance with Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, following the decision of the Kırıkkale 1st High Criminal Court dated 08.06.2026 and numbered 2026/84 E., which sentenced him to 5 years, 2 months, and 15 days in prison under Article 251/1 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) for the crime of 'Bribery,' and also ruled for the separate application of judicial control measures, including a travel ban, as part of the investigation conducted against him."
