Ministry of National Education prepares for sanctions: Municipal daycares at risk

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin’s statement, "We will continue to sign protocols with the structures you call 'sects and cults' and we call 'NGOs'," remains fresh in memory, and now a new move has come from the ministry.

NEW CIRCULAR FROM THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) announced in its latest circular that inspections of institutions providing unauthorized education and student housing services will be increased. In this context, services for daycares and preschool education, particularly those run by opposition municipalities, have come under scrutiny.

THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN BENEFIT IN THREE METROPOLITAN CITIES

According to a report by Sözcü, metropolitan municipalities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir were providing support to thousands of families through child activity centers and daycares. While there were no municipal daycares in Istanbul until 2019, 127 branches were opened in subsequent years, providing services to a total of 12 thousand 367 children. In Ankara, approximately 2 thousand children are receiving education in 20 active centers. In Izmir, preschool programs for children aged 36-66 months are being conducted at 22 locations. The total number of beneficiaries in the three major cities exceeds 16 thousand.

EMPHASIS ON 'UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITY' AND FINES

With the updated circular, it was stated that these centers are operating 'without permission' and that places operating under names such as 'playhouse' or similar must be closed. Fines of up to 660 thousand 600 TL are envisaged for institutions that do not comply with the legal regulation. The circular emphasized that it is against the law for municipalities to provide preschool education services under different names outside of schools.

PRACTICE COULD SPARK DEBATE

It was noted that the practice primarily covers municipalities governed by the opposition. If such a practice is implemented, the elimination of preschool education opportunities provided for thousands of children and families could come to the agenda.
