MIT and Interpol requirement introduced for foreign citizens

New criteria have been introduced for foreigners who will become citizens of the Republic of Turkey. With the new regulation, foreigners who will receive a Republic of Turkey ID card must pass security investigations conducted by both the Police and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT). Furthermore, citizenship will not be granted without double verification from Interpol.

Director General of Population and Citizenship Affairs İbrahim Taşyapan, in his presentation to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Foreign Affairs Committee, explained how the Turkish citizenship processes work and addressed recent allegations. Taşyapan stated that one of the most important stages in granting Turkish citizenship is the security investigation conducted by the Police and the MIT. He stated that if these institutions do not provide a positive opinion, citizenship procedures will not be carried out.
