MIT warns citizens via published video: 'Their identity must be questioned'

In the video published on MIT's website, it is pointed out that intelligence has a very broad target audience, versatile branches of work, and multidimensional goals, stating, "There is no global definition of espionage, which is frequently resorted to in intelligence work."

The video explains that espionage activities have different meanings in terms of "perception, implementation, and judgment," which reveals legal differences regarding what is considered espionage, and notes that every country includes espionage activities in its own domestic law.

Stating that espionage activity in Turkey is regulated under the title "Crimes Against State Secrets and Espionage" in the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237, the video provides the following information:

"Hostile intelligence personnel, or those likely to be hostile, establish contact with our citizens through various methods. Hostile intelligence services targeting our country's interests, unity, integrity, and values can recruit the citizens they contact as spies. Intelligence services may ask the spies they utilize to conduct analysis or prepare reports from open-source information. They may request that the individuals they target learn address information or conduct reconnaissance on important buildings or facilities."

"NOTIFY SECURITY UNITS"

The video also states that hostile intelligence services can use organized crime and terrorist organizations for espionage purposes, and provides the following warnings to citizens:

"It should be known that assisting foreign intelligence personnel, whether consciously or unconsciously, is a crime. Before answering probing, suspicious, and sensitive questions asked by people we do not know, the identity of the person asking the question must be questioned. In case of encountering suspicious behavior, security units should be notified immediately.

Our citizens can share issues they consider important, suspicious, or wish to report through the 'how can you help' section on the homepage of 'www.mit.gov.tr'. It should not be forgotten that it is a civic duty not to provide opportunities to intelligence extensions that seek to collect information against our country by abusing the high moral values of our society."
