Monkeypox scare in Istanbul

In Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, symptoms on the body of a foreign national raised suspicions that they might have monkeypox.

A health team went to the person's location and reportedly took samples from the rashes on their body.

EXAMINATION CONDUCTED

The Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate announced that the foreign national, who was taken under observation in Beyoğlu due to suspicion, does not have mpox disease.

The directorate's statement reported that the individual was transferred to a hospital to undergo necessary tests and medical examinations in accordance with health protocols.

The statement said, "...as a result of the examination and test results, it has been determined that the individual does not have monkeypox disease."

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF THE DISEASE?

Common symptoms of mpox disease include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and skin rashes or mucosal lesions that can last for 2-4 weeks, accompanied by swollen lymph nodes.

In most recorded cases, the finding of skin rash was specifically identified.

Furthermore, it is reported that because patients often disregard symptoms such as muscle and headaches, most cases are detected in the advanced stages of the disease, leading to delayed treatment.

HOW IS MONKEYPOX TRANSMITTED?

Mpox can be transmitted through close contact with someone who has the virus, with contaminated materials, or with infected animals. The virus can pass to the fetus during pregnancy or to the newborn during or after birth.

Mpox is treated with supportive care for symptoms such as pain and fever, with close attention to nutrition, fluid intake, skin care, prevention of secondary infections, and treatment of co-infections, including HIV if present.
