Motorcycle couriers prepare for a three-day strike
Cargo and food delivery couriers will stop work for three days between January 18-20, claiming that the new fee schedules have not provided the expected improvement in their earnings.
Stating that the payment policies announced with the start of the new year are not reflected in their actual earnings, self-employed couriers express that their income has declined due to the impact of rising expenses. For these reasons, they have announced that they will hold a three-day strike, shutting down their engines, on January 18, 19, and 20.
Although companies announced increases in per-package fees, distance payments, and weekly bonuses at the beginning of the year, couriers emphasize that these raises do not reflect the reality on the ground. According to the couriers' claims, while the wage increases may appear high mathematically, it is impossible to reach the expected income due to order density, the distribution of deliveries, and irregular working hours. Therefore, it is stated that there has been no meaningful increase in net earnings compared to last year.
Some delivery platforms suggest that a courier who delivers 200 packages a week could reach a monthly gross income of 120 thousand liras, and they announce that there has been an increase of around 60 percent for deliveries exceeding 2 kilometers, with bonuses provided for exceeding targets. However, couriers in the field say that these calculations are made only according to ideal conditions and that it is difficult to reach similar figures in daily reality.
Couriers also point out that they have to cover all their own expenses. They underline that every type of cost, from motorcycle purchases to fuel expenses, equipment and maintenance costs, to BAĞ-KUR premiums and taxes, is paid by them. They argue that when these expenses are deducted, the officially announced incomes do not reflect the actual earnings obtained.
It was stated that the three-day action does not cover all couriers and that those who wish to continue working may do so. However, those participating are preparing to stop work on January 18-20 to protest against rising costs and uncertain income policies.
