Murat Kurum detail in mining disaster: He approved the mine's capacity increase

The Çöpler Gold Mine, where the disaster occurred, has frequently been in the news for capacity increases despite warnings from experts. While discussions on the matter continue, it has been learned that a capacity increase was implemented at the mine last year and that the approval for this was granted during the time when AKP Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) mayoral candidate Murat Kurum was the Minister of Environment and Urbanization. 

APPROVAL FOR CAPACITY INCREASE

During the tenure of Murat Kurum, who was nominated by the AKP for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the 2nd Capacity Increase approval process was initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change on December 31, 2019. The following statement was made on the Ministry's website regarding the issue:

“Regarding the 2nd Capacity Increase and Flotation Facility project for the Çöpler Complex Mine with license numbers 847, 49729, and 20067313, planned to be carried out by Anagold Madencilik San. ve Tic. A.Ş. in the Çöpler locality of the İliç district of Erzincan province, the EIA Application File submitted to our Ministry has been reviewed and found appropriate in accordance with Article 8 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation, and the EIA Process for the project has begun.

Until the Environmental Impact Assessment process is completed, all kinds of information regarding the process and opinions, questions, and suggestions regarding the project can be sent to the Erzincan Governorship (Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization) or the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Announced to the relevant parties and the public.”
