Murat Yetkin: 'Erdoğan listening to Özel seems like a democratic way out'

Journalist and author Murat Yetkin, noting that the 104th anniversary of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey is being celebrated and that citizens in Turkey have not given up on the ballot box following the March 31 local elections, wrote: "In Turkey, the public rarely shows its reaction in the streets or squares. This is partly because those who take to the streets for democratic reactions, or even celebrations, risk harsh police intervention, arrest, and being accused of terrorism. In this situation, the ballot box remains the last refuge. A turnout rate of 80 percent, which most countries cannot even come close to, is perceived in our country as a decline in participation."

Noting that the March 31 local elections did not change the government despite weakening it, Yetkin stated: "Further restricting the powers of the Parliament in favor of the executive, especially at a stage where the loss of power of the ruling front has become visible, will not be a bright idea for Turkey's democratic future.

Instead of this path, which would also open him up to interest-based bargaining, it seems like a democratic way out for President Erdoğan to listen to CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who says, 'Let's sit down and talk.'
