Important observations from Müsavat Dervişoğlu regarding the Selahattin Demirtaş case: 'What is the justification?'
İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu, who visited Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Victory Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, made significant assessments during a live broadcast he attended.
While the political agenda continues to progress between the topics of Silivri and boycotts, political party leaders' visits to Silivri also continue.
Most recently, İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu visited Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ümit Özdağ, who are being held at the Marmara Prison in Silivri.
İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu, who visited İmamoğlu and Özdağ, answered questions from Kürşad Oğuz on Halk TV.
Regarding the question about Demirtaş, Dervişoğlu said, "If he is facing an injustice, protecting his rights and legal standing, regardless of where he is, is a matter that falls within my political responsibilities."
Müsavat Dervişoğlu explained the topics he discussed with İmamoğlu in Silivri with the following words:
"There is only one reason why Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu is currently imprisoned in Silivri, and that is because he is a presidential candidate. The process already began with a great absurdity.
First, they disregarded his diploma, then he went through an interrogation process formed by the testimonies of secret witnesses, and subsequently, he was arrested. If İmamoğlu had not been a presidential candidate, there would have been no thought of canceling his diploma, nor would he be in Silivri today.
Looking at it from this framework, we can say that we are facing an unfair, unlawful, and unjust result. We discussed these with him."
WILL HE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT İMAMOĞLU?
When asked whether the İYİ Party would support İmamoğlu's candidacy in the 2028 elections, Dervişoğlu replied, "From my perspective, standing by anyone whose rights and legal standing have been violated, in terms of defending rights and the law, is a humanitarian, conscientious, moral, and political responsibility."
STATEMENT ON SELAHATTİN DEMİRTAŞ
Dervişoğlu gave the following response to a question regarding former HDP Co-Chairman Selahattin Demirtaş, who is being held in Edirne:
"I also saw Can Atalay during my visits today. I am someone who expressed that the Constitutional Court's decision regarding Mr. Atalay's oath as a member of parliament and the ruling given about him should not be disregarded by being read in parliament. Therefore, if law, democracy, and justice are at stake, no one should expect statements from me based on my prejudices. I say what I believe.
"WHAT IS THE JUSTIFICATION FOR NOT CONCLUDING THE CASE?"
Mr. Selahattin Demirtaş's case has continued for a long time. Is there missing evidence, or is the data insufficient? I mean, what is the justification for not concluding a case that has lasted 8 years? All of these are subjects of debate.
Therefore, if he is facing an injustice, protecting his rights and legal standing, regardless of where he is, is a matter that falls within my political responsibilities. That is why I do not subject a person to an evaluation based on their political views. When I set out on this path, I set out in pursuit of justice, and I said that what Turkey needs is justice, freedom, and equality. I stated that where these exist, brotherhood will also follow.
I have been saying that I have been chairman for about 1 year, and during my 1-year chairmanship, I have avoided as much as possible making any remarks that would wound the public conscience. Whatever their name, whatever their affiliation, whatever their past, whatever their ethnicity, it makes no difference to me. If they have been subjected to injustice and if this injustice is being spread over time to be used for blackmail against them or the institution they belong to, fighting against it in the name of Müsavat Dervişoğlu is a debt of honor for me. I do not discriminate against anyone."
