‘Mythomania’ debate between Health Minister Memişoğlu and the opposition: ‘The Minister is in a state of helplessness’

The 2025 Central Government Budget and the 2023 Final Account Law Proposals are being discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). Following his speech during the Ministry of Health budget proposal discussions in the General Assembly, Health Minister Memişoğlu responded to questions directed at him by members of parliament.

During the moment Minister Memişoğlu was responding to allegations regarding the 'Newborn Gang', “I see that some people have contracted pathological mythomania” his remarks triggered a verbal altercation in the General Assembly.

“I SEE THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE CONTRACTED MYTHOMANIA”

Minister Memişoğlu stated, “I was not going to revisit the newborn issue. Because I had explained all the facts in the commission. Those who cannot tolerate the truth and those who ran away from it have not learned.

Despite this, I observe with sadness that some insist on not giving up on lying to the public. In fact, even though I am not a psychiatrist, as a general surgeon, I can see that some have contracted mythomania, which is a pathological lying disorder.

May God grant them healing, hopefully. If they apply to us, we will do our best for their treatment,” he said.

Speaking on the allegations of remaining a bystander, Minister Memişoğlu said, "We have said it many times; we were at the helm of this matter. Learn the facts, do not create perceptions. By the nature of the work, we worked with the prosecutor's office and law enforcement during the investigation phase, which was conducted in secrecy. We carried out the special inspections. Not every piece of information obtained within the scope of the investigation's confidentiality reached us simultaneously. However, this is neither helplessness nor watching from the sidelines. This is a mandatory method used to protect the confidentiality of the investigation. As a senior surgeon, I did not engage with novices." he replied.

Taking the floor after Minister Memişoğlu's speech, İYİ Party MP Turhan Çömez pointed out that Minister Memişoğlu had accused the parliament of being mythomaniacs, stating, "The Minister is in a state of helplessness. He does not have the capacity to answer all these allegations. The Minister does not have the authority to respond to these claims."
