Naci Görür issues warning for two provinces following earthquakes in the Aegean: A call to local and central government

Pointing to Greece's emergency plans, Görür said, “I don't know how much longer it will continue. It is happening in the form of an earthquake swarm, but the Greek government immediately intervened with an attitude that I applaud—one that cares for its people and prioritizes human life—and they have taken and are continuing to take the necessary precautions.” Görür continued his remarks as follows;

"IT DOES NOT RESEMBLE VOLCANIC ACTIVITY"

"There is no major earthquake yet. It is not clear whether there will be one, but precautions are being taken. This is the attitude we truly desire, love, and embrace. This earthquake is generally happening for this reason. The mechanism is as follows.

Earthquakes occur as a result of plate movements. Earthquakes occur at plate boundaries and within plates. As plates move, earthquakes occur at their boundaries and within them. For example, the North Anatolian Fault is a plate boundary. It is the boundary between the Eurasian and Anatolian plates.

Earthquakes occur continuously along the North Anatolian Fault. For example, the East Anatolian Fault, which killed 50-60 thousand people, is a plate boundary. It is the boundary between the Arabian plate and the Anatolian and African plates. A movement occurred at that boundary. 50-60 thousand people died.

Now, the cause of these earthquakes is also the African plate. It is subducting beneath the Anatolian plate in the Hellenic-Cypriot subduction zone. The Anatolian plate is also being stretched north-south as a result of this movement. Normal faults are occurring there, they are becoming active, and these earthquakes are happening.

Some scientists, some colleagues say, ‘This is volcanic activity.’ I mean, it could be, but in all likelihood, it has nothing to do with volcanism. Indeed, based on our interactions with our Greek colleagues, it does not look much like volcanic activity."

"IF IT RESULTS IN A MAJOR RUPTURE..."

Pointing out that the areas where the earthquakes occurred today are very complex, Görür continued his words as follows:

“A large number of earthquakes are occurring in this region. To date, there have been perhaps close to 500 earthquakes. We do not yet know what the outcome will be. If it results in a major rupture, then Turkey's borders will be affected by this.

When I say Turkey's borders, I am referring to the coastal section from Aydın to Muğla. A tsunami could also occur here. It would also cause destruction in structures that are to some extent dilapidated or not well-built. If it does not result in that, we do not expect any danger.

Again, it would be beneficial for the local governments and the central government in our southern coastal areas to be a bit more careful and more observant of the events. Just as Greece has taken much more serious precautions.

We do not know how long this will last in this way, but after a certain time, these earthquake swarms—sometimes they last up to 1-2 months—will decrease and disappear. I hope it does not result in a major earthquake."
