Naci Görür: We are currently expecting a 47 percent probability of an earthquake in the Sea of Marmara

Appearing as a guest on the program Farklı Açılar (Different Angles) broadcast on tv100, Naci Görür made statements regarding the expected major earthquake.

Görür stated, "We feel that time is running out. The reason for this is the international studies conducted. The probability of the earthquake occurring in the Sea of Marmara is 47 percent. We are currently expecting a 47 percent probability of an earthquake."

Here are the highlights from Naci Görür's statements:

"MOST OF THE CANDIDATES WANTED TO MEET"

Kübra Par: In your opinion, how much was the earthquake issue able to take center stage in the local elections? Do you think awareness on this subject has increased?

All candidates placed the earthquake at the very top of their agenda. For example, almost all of the mayoral candidates running in the local elections in Istanbul held meetings with me.

Kübra Par: How many candidates requested a meeting with you, if you include the districts?

It is over 15. This is just in Istanbul. Furthermore, in almost every part of Turkey, most of the candidates wanted to meet with me.

"SO THAT MY PEOPLE DO NOT DIE"

My concern is not politics. It is so that my people do not die. It is to make our country earthquake-resistant so that earthquakes in this country no longer claim lives in numbers we cannot accept.

Kübra Par: There were also those who offered you a mayoral candidacy during this process. But you said, "I will remain above politics," and did not accept.

Yes, exactly. Thank goodness they were very understanding as well. If I remain a scientist, I can make my voice heard by people from all walks of life.

"THE REAL SURVIVAL ISSUE IS THE EARTHQUAKE"

Kübra Par: If there is no recent earthquake, after a while, citizens do not want to hear or see those bad memories or that bad possibility. This ignoring of the earthquake in society is somewhat of a survival reflex, but can we change this a little?

We must change this. This is, in the true sense, Turkey's survival issue. I do not know what the survival issues mentioned by politicians are, but this is the real survival issue. The earthquake mechanism in this country began 13.6 million years ago. Earthquakes have been continuing since then and will continue for millions more. If we bury tens of thousands of our people in the ground in a single night with every earthquake, it means we have no future.

"A PERSON WHO BELIEVES IN SCIENCE RECOGNIZES THE DANGER"

We cannot stop earthquakes. Therefore, the work we can do regarding earthquakes is to create earthquake-resistant settlement areas. Some people are afraid when they hear or talk about earthquakes. There is a beautiful saying: "Fear is of no use against destiny." A modern person, an intelligent person, a person who believes in science, instead of being afraid, first recognizes the danger that threatens them and that will turn the lives of their children into a dungeon in a single night.

"A SPECIAL LAW IS NECESSARY"

A special law is necessary to prepare a city for an earthquake. A special law is one that clears the obstacles in the way of local administrators, guides citizens in this matter, and removes difficulties. In other words, we need a law that clears all the brush and debris from the path of administrators and the public and encourages this work.

"IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR ADMINISTRATORS TO RECEIVE EARTHQUAKE TRAINING"

First, it is essential that the administrators who manage our cities—the Governor and the Mayor—have received earthquake training. Second, city management, especially urban development, urban growth, population growth in the city, and zoning and settlement in the city, should never be under the authority of city councils or municipal councils. Nature itself, that is, the earth itself, should decide this.

"MICROZONING OF THE CITY MUST BE DONE"

Kübra Par: Should a scientific board be formed to approve zoning plans?

No. Within that, the microzoning of the city must be done. That is, first, a geological map of the city will be produced. A hydrogeological map will be produced, and the topography will be mapped. Seismological studies will be conducted. We do not know what the speed of the earthquake will be.

"THE PUBLIC MUST ACQUIRE AN EARTHQUAKE CULTURE"

The public needs to be informed, and there must be awareness and the public must acquire an earthquake culture. You cannot make the city where a public that has not acquired an earthquake culture lives earthquake-resistant.

"TURKEY WILL FALL TO ITS KNEES"

Istanbul is the region where Turkey's industry is most concentrated. Istanbul accounts for nearly 60% of Turkey's gross domestic product. If an earthquake occurs in the Marmara Region, the economy in Marmara will collapse. Turkey will fall to its knees. Because it is the Marmara Region that feeds Turkey. Turkey cannot feed the Marmara Region.

Kübra Par: Is there a countdown for Istanbul? Do we have time?

We do not know the time. But we feel that time is running out. The reason for this is the international studies conducted. According to universal international studies, with the most recently revised date, the probability of the earthquake occurring in the Sea of Marmara today, within 30 years after 1999, is 47 percent. We are currently expecting a 47 percent probability of an earthquake. This is a very high event.

"THEY WILL PRODUCE AN EARTHQUAKE UP TO 7.5"

If the Adalar fault and the Kumburgaz fault break at once, they will produce an earthquake up to 7.5.

Because in 1766, both of these faults broke at the same time in Istanbul.

But if they break separately, Istanbul will face two earthquakes close to 7 at certain times.
