National chess player Ediz Gürel becomes the youngest Grandmaster in Turkish chess history

At the Prague Chess Festival, by drawing his match against Erwin L’ami and securing his final GM norm, Ediz Gürel succeeded in earning the title of the 'Youngest Grandmaster' in Turkish chess history.

GM Gürel is currently ranked among the top 20 athletes in the world under the age of 20 in the FIDE Live ELO rating, and holds the second position globally among athletes under the age of 16 based on his ELO rating.

GM Gürel’s Live ELO rating is 2571. Showing a very successful performance in the Challengers category of the Prague Chess Festival, Ediz Gürel will play his championship match today against the Ukrainian Anton Korobov, who has an ELO of 2666.

The number of grandmasters in Turkish chess has been increasing since 2012.

Celebrating the success Ediz Gürel achieved at a young age, Turkish Chess Federation (TSF) President Gülkız Tulay stated, "We are proud of Ediz Gürel’s successful performance. Our national athlete continues his journey with incredible discipline and hard work. He is Turkey’s first athlete to become a GM at the age of 15. I wholeheartedly congratulate both our athlete and his family, who are by his side at every moment.

Since 2012, our number of Grandmasters has increased, and new ones are on the way. Athletes like the world’s youngest IM Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, IM Işık Can, and IM Alparslan Işık could become GMs very soon.

The number of GMs in Turkey, which was 5 until 2012, has reached 15 since 2012. These names are as follows:
