Nazlı Ilıcak released from prison

Nazlı Ilıcak has been released following approximately two months of detention.

The 79-year-old Ilıcak had entered prison after an appellate court upheld a 2-year and 6-month prison sentence for "slander" in a case heard at the Istanbul 15th Criminal Court of First Instance, initiated by a complaint from Public Prosecutor Orhan Kapıcı.

Six defendants, including Ahmet Altan, Nazlı Ilıcak, and Mehmet Altan—who were previously sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for "attempting to overthrow the constitutional order" in relation to the "FETÖ media structure" case—were retried following a reversal decision by the Court of Cassation.

In that case, the court had ruled for the acquittal of Mehmet Altan. Ilıcak had been sentenced to eight years and nine months in prison for "aiding the organization" and was released at that time.

Ilıcak had received a 2-year and 6-month prison sentence for "slander" in the case resulting from Prosecutor Orhan Kapıcı's complaint regarding an article she wrote in 2016.
