Necati Gürcan, who murdered his wife in Bursa, commits suicide in prison

Necati Gürcan, who stabbed and killed his wife Ebru Gürcan in front of their daughter in Bursa, had been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional murder against a spouse'.

Gürcan, who was being held at the Bursa H-Type Closed Penal Institution, committed suicide in prison.

Gürcan was found hanging from a power strip cord on the window bars in his single-person cell. Following an examination, it was determined that Gürcan had died.

According to the information obtained, no signs of physical assault were found on Gürcan's body.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

Ebru Gürcan, a mother of two living on 6th Street in the Bahar neighborhood of Bursa's Osmangazi district, had obtained a restraining order against her husband, Necati Gürcan, with whom she was constantly arguing.

Necati Gürcan, who did not comply with the restraining order, entered the house where Ebru Gürcan lived with their children by jumping from the roof onto the balcony.

The argument that started in the presence of their 16-year-old daughter turned into a fight. Necati Gürcan murdered Ebru Gürcan with a knife he took from the kitchen. 

Ebru Gürcan, who was seriously injured, lost her life at the hospital where she was taken. Necati Gürcan, who was caught after the murder, was arrested by the court to which he was referred at the courthouse.

Necati Gürcan, who was tried at the Bursa 15th High Criminal Court for the crime of 'intentional murder against a spouse', said in his defense: "I did not act with the intent to kill. I just wanted to hurt her so she would open the door. She was on the other side of that door. I did not do these things intentionally. I swung the knife so she would open the door fully. When the door opened fully, the knife touched her. It entered her heart. The incident happened by accident. They wanted me to receive psychiatric treatment. I did not accept it."

The public prosecutor requested that he be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional murder against a spouse'. The lawyer for Ebru Gürcan's relatives requested that the defendant be punished for the crime of 'premeditated murder' and that no sentence reduction be applied.

Announcing its verdict, the court panel sentenced the defendant to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional murder against a spouse' and decided that his detention should continue.
