The theft scandal, which came to light during a routine inspection conducted by the prosecutor responsible for the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Evidence Office on December 1, has become a major topic of discussion in Turkey.

During the inspection, the absence of office employee Erdal T., who had not been coming to work for some time, drew attention. Following this, the safe, for which clerk Kemal Demir held the key, was opened. Upon opening the safe, it was discovered that it was completely empty.

DETERMINED TO HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN

It was determined that Erdal T., who worked as a staff member at the Evidence Office, had taken 25 kilograms of gold and 50 kilograms of silver and disappeared. It was learned that the suspect had not been going to work for a while and had traveled to England with his wife and children. Consequently, an arrest warrant was issued for Erdal T. and his wife, while clerk Kemal Demir was taken into custody.

THE SEIZED GOLD CAME FROM A SMUGGLING OPERATION

In the investigation, it was determined that the stolen gold and silver were materials seized during a gold smuggling operation targeting migrants. During the inventory conducted at the Evidence Office, it was determined that 9,906 grams of gold, 49 Reşat gold coins, 438 necklaces, 66 grams of earrings, 5 kilograms of gold, 7 emblem gold coins, 167 full gold coins, 606 bracelets, 1 kilogram 477 grams of bracelets, 376 half gold coins, 1,328 quarter gold coins, 40 Republic gold coins, 2,701 grams of jewelry, 487 Ata gold coins, 6 Gremse gold coins, and 50 kilograms of silver were present, and that a total of 25 kilograms of gold and 50 kilograms of silver had been stolen. The total value of the stolen items was reported to be approximately 147 million TL.

It was learned that the suspect, Erdal T., began working as a permanent staff member in 2021. It is alleged that Erdal T., who was described by his colleagues as a quiet employee, sent a message to some of his coworkers after the incident saying, "I sold the goods, may God grant you prosperity."
