New development in the 'Freedom for İmamoğlu' banner crisis: Former AKP deputy calls for 'lifting their immunity'!
Former AKP deputy Mehmet Metiner has demanded that the parliamentary immunity of the CHP deputies who hung a 'Freedom for İmamoğlu' banner on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge be lifted.
The use of photographs, videos, and audio recordings of CHP presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently detained at Silivri Prison, has been banned on public transportation vehicles such as buses, subways, metrobus lines, and ferries.
While this decision by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office drew widespread backlash, CHP deputies Suat Özçağdaş, Ali Gökçek, Mahmut Tanal, Nimet Özdemir, İlhami Özcan Aygun, and Baran Yazgan unfurled a banner reading "Free İmamoğlu" on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge.
While the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has now launched an investigation into the hanging of the banner on the bridge, former AKP deputy Mehmet Metiner has called for their immunity to be lifted.
Supporting the prosecutor's decision to launch an investigation, Metiner stated, "The judiciary is doing its job, but the political institution and the TBMM are paving the way for the abuse of immunity by not acting on those summaries of proceedings."
In a post on his social media account, Metiner noted the following:
"The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the CHP deputies who hung that banner on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge despite the judicial decision.
Let me tell you what will happen: Those prosecutorial summaries of proceedings will go to the TBMM. And they will sit there without any action being taken.
Because the deputies know this, they listen to neither judicial decisions, nor law, nor statutes.
The judiciary is doing its job. But the political institution and the TBMM are paving the way for the abuse of immunity by not acting on those summaries of proceedings. In my opinion, the immunity of deputies who have such summaries of proceedings against them should be lifted. Otherwise, threats against the judiciary and unlawful acts like those of organization militants will continue to increase. Immunity should be limited only to parliamentary floor speeches and thoughts."
