New development in the extradition case of Eylem Tok to Turkey

Eylem Tok, the mother of 17-year-old Timur Cihantimur, who caused the death of Oğuz Murat Aci in Istanbul on March 1 while driving without a license, has appeared in court once again regarding her extradition to Turkey.

Eylem Tok, who fled to the US with her 17-year-old son Timur Cihantimur following the fatal traffic accident in Istanbul and was subsequently arrested in Boston upon Turkey's request, has had her detention continued at her extradition hearing.

Tok appeared for her third "extradition" hearing at the John Joseph Moakly Courthouse in Boston.

During the hearing, which lasted approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, the prosecution emphasized that Eylem Tok's crime was established in Turkey when she smuggled her son abroad following the accident.

The defense, meanwhile, argued that Tok had no prior criminal record in Turkey and that, according to the agreement between the two countries, her extradition was not mandatory as the crime carries a prison sentence of less than 1 year under the Turkish Penal Code.

Judge Donald J. Cabell stated that the court proceedings had become overly prolonged due to the details presented by both sides. He requested that both parties summarize their arguments in no more than 8 pages and submit them to him within one week, while ruling that Tok's detention shall continue.
