New development in the Kaşif Kozinoğlu investigation: 10 people detained

The Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has reopened the investigation into the death of former MİT officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu, who passed away in 2011 while imprisoned at Silivri Prison as part of the Ergenekon conspiracy case.

As part of the new investigation, judicial proceedings have been initiated against 11 suspects who were working at the penal institution at the time of the incident. While 10 of the suspects were detained, it was determined that one person is currently abroad.

SPECIALLY ASSIGNED TO KOZİNOĞLU'S WARD

According to a report by Sabah, Ferhat Veysi Gül, who began working at Silivri Prison in May 2011, was specially assigned to work in the ward where Kaşif Kozinoğlu was held.

On November 12, 2011, when Kozinoğlu fell ill, the emergency button in the ward was pressed. It is alleged that Gül, who saw the warning on the central panel, did not intervene.

As a result of the examination of camera footage, it was claimed that the prison guard Gül, after seeing the alarm, moved in the opposite direction of the ward and turned the volume of the radio in the room to the maximum level. It was stated that this prevented other personnel from hearing the alarm.

HEADED TO THE PRAYER ROOM AFTER THE ALARM

According to the allegations, Gül prevented other personnel from hearing Kozinoğlu's calls for help due to the radio being turned up loud and the use of the radio transmitter.

It was stated that Gül, who was later seen on camera footage heading toward the prayer room, entered the ward with other prison staff approximately 15 minutes after the incident.

According to allegations in the investigation file, it was assessed that he was trying to avoid suspicion in this manner.

AKIN GÜRLEK ANNOUNCED THE INVESTIGATION

Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek made a statement on his social media account regarding the reopened investigation into the death of Kaşif Kozinoğlu.

Gürlek included the following statements in his post:

"No matter how many years pass, we are determined not to leave any suspicious death in the dark. We are re-examining files that raise questions in the public conscience, regardless of the time that has passed; we are following the trail of every piece of evidence that can be reached.

Former MİT officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu fell ill on November 12, 2011, at the Silivri No. 1 L-Type Closed Penal Institution where he was detained, was referred to Silivri State Hospital, and it was determined that he had passed away upon arrival at the hospital.

In the investigation conducted after the incident, camera footage and medical documents were examined; witness statements were taken from penal institution, gendarmerie, and health personnel, as well as wardmates and the deceased's spouse; and a decision of non-prosecution was issued on April 10, 2012.

Our Department for Investigation of Unsolved Crimes has re-examined the file; in light of the evaluations made by our Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the decision of non-prosecution was lifted by the decision of the Silivri Criminal Court of Peace dated August 26, 2026, and the investigation was reopened.

A confidentiality order has been issued as part of the new investigation, and a special investigation team has been formed to launch comprehensive efforts to clarify all aspects of the incident.

At the stage reached today, our Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated judicial proceedings against 11 suspects who were working at the penal institution at the time of the incident; 10 suspects have been detained, and it has been determined that 1 suspect is abroad as a FETÖ fugitive."

WHO IS KAŞİF KOZİNOĞLU?

Born in Trabzon in 1955, Kaşif Kozinoğlu served in the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) for many years. He undertook various duties on behalf of MİT in regions including Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan.

Kozinoğlu was arrested in 2011 as part of the Oda TV case and sent to Silivri Prison. He passed away on November 12, 2011, shortly before he was due to present his defense during his detention.

In the statements made following Kozinoğlu's death, it was reported that the cause of death was a heart attack.

HIS WORDS BEFORE HIS DEATH ARE BACK ON THE AGENDA

The words Kozinoğlu used in a statement shortly before his death, "They can make you do anything, including killing," have also come back to the agenda following the reopening of the investigation.

It was stated that records and statements regarding the final period Kozinoğlu spent in prison are being re-examined as part of the new investigation.
