New development in the Seçil Erzan case: Signature on document submitted to court found to be fake

A new report has been entered into the case of Seçil Erzan, the former Levent Branch Manager of Denizbank, one of the events that has created a stir in Turkey. 

Several decisions were made during the last hearing held on March 8, which lasted 13 hours. The court, which ruled that a letter be written to the Gaziantep High Criminal Court to take the testimony of complainant Selçuk İnan for the hearing adjourned to May 24, also ruled that the request to hear Fatih Terim as a witness would be evaluated at a later date.

Among the decisions taken was the ruling to “obtain an additional report from the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) regarding whether the signatures belonging to defendant Asiye Öztürk on the documents requested by the attorney for complainant Selçuk İnan actually belong to the defendant.”

COUNCIL OF FORENSIC MEDICINE DECLARED "SIGNATURE IS FAKE"

The wet-signed letterhead document from Denizbank, which was claimed to bear the signatures of Seçil Erzan and her assistant Asiye Öztürk, was sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine.

The Council of Forensic Medicine examined the signature that was claimed to be that of the bank branch manager's assistant, Asiye Öztürk. The examination stated that the signature on the alleged document did not belong to Asiye Öztürk.

THIS REPORT HAS BEEN ENTERED INTO THE CASE FILE

The prepared report stated the following:

"As some diagnostic elements may be lost in photocopied documents, documents prepared in a computer environment, fax printouts, and carbon copies, and as there is a possibility that such documents could be obtained through other methods, and since external elements such as signatures, writing, or artifacts can be added to a document, it is problematic to conduct an examination on photocopied documents and it is generally necessary to conduct examinations on original documents; assuming that the documents in question were obtained from the original documents, the examination conducted in terms of drawing style, habits, layout, slant, direction, and flow revealed that no connection or link could be established between the signatures on the documents subject to examination and the available comparison signatures of Asiye Öztürk; this is an OPINION REPORT stating these findings."

This report, sent to the court by the Council of Forensic Medicine, has been added to the case file.
