As the severe downpours affecting Istanbul and the Marmara region have led to floods and water damage, warnings regarding a new wave of precipitation have arrived one after another. Former İzmir Regional Director of Meteorology and meteorology expert Murat Şahin stated that the danger of precipitation has not yet passed and issued a call for "vigilance" for the Marmara region.
Şahin emphasized that over 100 kilograms of rain per square meter have fallen in Istanbul and that the soil is now saturated with water. Stating that for this reason, new and heavy rainfall could increase the risk of floods and inundation, Şahin said that urgent measures must be taken, especially in stream beds, channels, storm drains, and areas that could obstruct the flow of water.
In his assessment on October 10, Murat Şahin had stated that intense and prolonged rainfall in the Marmara, Aegean, and Western Mediterranean regions could create a danger of floods and inundation. Sharing current meteorological maps following the flooding in Istanbul, Şahin pointed out that the risk could continue in the coming days.

"THERE IS A RISK OF DISASTER AND LOSS OF LIFE"
Şahin stated that Turkey, especially the area around Istanbul, is under the influence of a deep low-pressure system originating from Iceland and a weather phenomenon known in meteorology as a "Cold Drop." He noted that the rainy system could remain effective in the region for another 2-3 days.
Stating that the amount of precipitation could increase even further with the new system, Şahin said, "If another 100 kilograms or more of rain falls on top of the 100 kilograms that have already fallen, a disaster could occur tomorrow. Floods, inundation, and loss of life could occur. Be careful!"
Stating that the risk continues throughout the Marmara region, Şahin emphasized that institutions and citizens in the provinces in the region must be prepared against the danger of extreme rainfall, floods, and inundation.
