Sharing the most negative scenario for Istanbul, Üşümezsoy stated that the Adalar Fault in the Marmara Sea is no longer active, noting that the real risk could stem from the fault located in the trough region off the coast of Silivri.

Seismologist Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy has brought the Istanbul earthquake debate back to the agenda with his statements regarding the fault lines in the Marmara region. Speaking on Habertürk TV, Üşümezsoy stated that the Adalar Fault Line, which is frequently mentioned by the public, is no longer active and that the real risk lies in the fault located in the trough region off the coast of Silivri.

Recalling that he has opposed the views that the Adalar Fault threatens Istanbul since the August 17, 1999 earthquake, Üşümezsoy said, "The broken fault extends along the Yalova-Çınarcık line." Describing the Adalar Fault as a "dead fault," Üşümezsoy emphasized that the fault that would cause major destruction in Istanbul is not there.

ATTENTION TO THE SILIVRI TROUGH

Stating that the real danger is the fault at a depth of 20 kilometers in the Silivri trough located off the coast of Silivri, Üşümezsoy expressed that this fault has the potential to produce an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2.
