New mandate announced for schools following attacks

Security measures are being increased following school attacks in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa. From now on, camera systems will be installed in all schools in Turkey, and these systems will be connected to the City Security Management System.

Following the distressing incidents in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa, security practices in educational institutions are being reshaped. With a new protocol signed between the Ministry of National Education (MEB) and the Ministry of Interior, it has been decided that camera systems will be mandatorily installed in all schools and that these systems will be integrated into the City Security Management System (KGYS).

According to the protocol, the scope of the KGYS, which currently includes only about 1,000 schools, will be expanded to cover all 55,000 schools in the country. This aims to ensure that students and educational staff are in a safer environment.

The camera systems will be directly connected to the KGYS, allowing law enforcement units to monitor schools continuously and centrally.

On the other hand, additional security measures will be taken in schools deemed to be at risk. Measures such as the presence of law enforcement officers in schools with high-risk scores, the assignment of school security coordinators, and the presence of patrol vehicles during entry and exit hours will be implemented. Furthermore, the risk assessment scoring system will be used more strictly.

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, in his statement regarding the new regulations, said, '18 million students, approximately 1.2 million personnel, approximately 75,000 schools, and over 100,000 institutions; all of these provide us with a data pool, and analyzing, detecting anomalies, and developing policies based on such a large scale is no longer possible with manual methods. There is a screen where all data is presented to the administrator who wants to get work done.'

While sharing the details of the protocol signed with the Ministry of Interior, Minister Tekin emphasized that camera systems in all schools will now be automatically integrated into the KGYS. Tekin stated, 'From now on, this will be in the standard construction specifications of all our schools; all schools will be connected, meaning all schools will now be monitored.'
