New mayor to be elected at Beşiktaş Municipality today following Rıza Akpolat's suspension: 3 names stand out in the corridors
Following the arrest of Rıza Akpolat, the Beşiktaş Municipal Council will meet today to elect an acting mayor. According to information obtained from behind-the-scenes sources, 3 candidates are emerging to replace Akpolat.
Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat, who was arrested on January 17 after being detained as part of a 'tender corruption operation' targeting the Beşiktaş Municipality in Istanbul, has been suspended from duty by a decision of the Ministry of Interior.
Following Akpolat's arrest and suspension, the Beşiktaş Municipal Council will meet today (January 23) to elect an acting mayor. All 31 members of the Beşiktaş Municipal Council are from the CHP.
The following statement was included in the announcement made by the Istanbul Governor's Office:
“In accordance with the provisions of Article 45 of the Municipal Law No. 5393, it has been deemed appropriate by our Governor's Office for the Beşiktaş Municipal Council to convene at the Beşiktaş Municipality Council Meeting Hall on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 14:00 to elect the Acting Mayor."
3 NAMES STAND OUT
According to the report by Ceylan Sever from Habertürk; it is alleged that Beşiktaş Deputy Mayor and Council Member Ali Rıza Yılmaz, Beşiktaş Municipality and IMM Council Member İlker Uluer, and Beşiktaş Municipality Council Member Ömer Rasim Şişman, who also serves as the IMM group secretary, will be candidates to become the new acting mayor of Beşiktaş.
