New regulation coming for cheese sales: It will no longer be sold under that name

It has been suggested that a draft Cheese Communiqué prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will ban the production and marketing of processed cheese in a way that evokes traditional cheeses such as tulum, örgü, çeçil, dil, tel, and kaşar, in order to prevent consumer deception.

Rising inflation in the country has also led to changes in food labels in supermarkets.

According to a report by Cevdet Fırat Aydoğmuş from Türkiye newspaper; the Turkish Food Codex Cheese Communiqué, which entered into force after being published in the Official Gazette dated February 8, 2015, is being updated.

With the draft Cheese Communiqué, the production and marketing of processed cheese in a way that evokes traditional or regional cheeses such as tulum, örgü, çeçil, dil, tel, and kaşar, and which would mislead the consumer, is being banned.

FONT SIZE AND SEASONING LIMITATIONS

The font size on processed cheese labels, which is currently at least 1.2 millimeters, will be increased to at least 3 millimeters. In addition, the total seasoning ratio in seasoned cheeses is limited to 6 percent.

The use of ingredients such as nuts, oilseeds, and grains for seasoning purposes in the form of paste or puree is prohibited. In processed cheeses, the use of expressions related to the intended use of the cheese in place of the food's name is being prevented.

The Ministry of Agriculture had also introduced a new regulation on food labels in April to protect consumers. The use of expressions such as “... flavored,” “... taste,” “... pleasure,” and similar phrases alongside the name of another food that does not possess the characteristics of the food it might be confused with, in the name and on the label of a food product, had also been banned.
