New social media regulation for children from Minister Göktaş: The perception of a perfect body and life
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş stated that the perception of a “perfect body and life” that children encounter on social media leads to serious consequences, and announced that they will launch a new social media regulation to protect children from the invisible dangers of online platforms.
Minister Göktaş drew attention to the risks children are exposed to on online platforms and announced that a new regulation will be implemented against the psychological and physical effects of social media.
Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş noted the following in a statement made on her social media account:
“What could be the reason for an 8-year-old child to stop eating? When I met with a colleague of mine recently, they stated that anorexia cases in their own country have dropped to the age of 8.
They mentioned anorexia in girls and, in boys, the use of substances to create an ideal body. Today, we all see perfect faces, bodies, and lives on social media.
This perception of “perfection” directly affects the psychological and physical development of our children; it can lead them to feel inadequate and think that they are not accepted as they are.
However, every child of ours is special and beautiful just as they are.
We are implementing our new social media regulation to protect them from these invisible but deeply scarring risks of online platforms. Come, let us not leave our children alone in this struggle. Let us act together for their future.”
