Newborn scandal in the TRNC: 5 nurses appear in court, 'conspiracy' claims on the agenda

While the repercussions of the newborn gang dismantled in Turkey continue, a new scandal has emerged from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In an incident at the newborn unit of the Nicosia Pandemic Hospital in the TRNC, one baby lost their life and six others were intubated after pure alcohol was mixed into baby formula.

5 NURSES APPEARED BEFORE THE JUDGE

Following the revelation of the scandalous incident, 5 nurses identified as K.Y., Ç.Ş., G.K., M.A., and A.D. were detained and brought before a judge. The Nicosia District Court accepted the prosecutor's request and issued a 3-day detention order for the suspects.

According to details shared by the investigating officer, it was learned that 4 of the 5 healthcare workers were on shift at the time of the incident, while one was on a different shift.

WITNESS STATEMENTS EXIST

It was stated in court that there are witness statements regarding the storage conditions of the alcohol used in the intensive care unit. It was also learned that camera footage will be examined to fully clarify the incident.

THEY ARE ACCUSED OF 'CAUSING DEATH BY NEGLIGENCE'

The prosecutor requested a 3-day detention on charges of 'causing death by negligence'. The request, which the defense attorneys did not object to, was accepted by the court panel.

THE BOTTLE HAD AN “ALCOHOL” LABEL ON IT

On the other hand, a question from one of the defense attorneys revealed another important detail. One of the lawyers asked whether the word “alcohol” was clearly written on the alcohol bottle. The police confirmed that there was an “alcohol” label on the bottle.

HEALTH MINISTER HAKAN DİNÇYÜREK DID NOT RESPOND TO OUR QUESTIONS

TRNC Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek, whom we reached regarding different aspects of the incident, left our questions unanswered.

Another dimension of the incident is high on the TRNC agenda. According to allegations, there is talk that this incident could be a political conspiracy due to the government crisis that has been ongoing in the TRNC for some time. Official authorities have not yet made a statement regarding these claims.
