No detention order, yet she is being held in the hospital under prosecutor's instruction

A striking development occurred while preparations were underway to take journalist Elif Akkuş to the hospital under police supervision. Although the detention order had been lifted, the prosecutor's office notified the hospital administration, "The suspect's treatment must continue, and she must be transferred to the Courthouse as soon as she is discharged," warning that legal action would be taken against hospital officials otherwise.

Akkuş's lawyers have obtained the letter sent by the prosecutor's office to the hospital administration.

NO DETENTION ORDER, BUT POLICE ARE KEEPING WATCH

The letter was conveyed to the hospital administration stating, "At this stage, it has been decided to terminate the detention. The suspect's treatment is to continue, all medical procedures and actions are to be carried out, and the Public Security Branch Directorate is to be informed when the suspect is to be discharged from the hospital; the Public Security Branch Directorate is to ensure the suspect's transfer to the Courthouse as soon as she is discharged from the hospital, all necessary procedural and legal measures are to be taken, no opportunity for the suspect to escape is to be allowed, and it is to be known that all relevant responsibility lies with the hospital administration; otherwise, legal action will be initiated against all responsible officials of the relevant hospital..."

Akkuş's lawyers, Hüseyin Ersöz and Nazlı Çubuklu, have filed their objections to the police, the prosecutor's office, and the hospital administration, and have also informed the Ankara Bar Association.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Elif Akkuş, who had been working at TRT for 25 years, was taken into custody after being suspended from her duties without an explanation.

The news of the detention was announced by Akkuş's lawyer, Hüseyin Ersöz.

Ersöz had stated, "TRT News reporter Elif Akkuş was just taken into custody in Ankara. Akkuş, whose home in Istanbul was searched in the evening hours but against whom the Arrest Warrant could not be executed because she was in Ankara, and who was summoned to the Public Security Branch Directorate by phone, went to the police station and turned herself in."

Akkuş, who fell ill after being taken into custody, was hospitalized and has been kept under observation.
