The 4-year term of Mehmet Akarca, who was elected to the position of President of the Court of Cassation on March 24, 2020, expired as of March 24.
In this context, members of the Court of Cassation went to the polls on Monday, March 25, to determine the new president of the High Court, who will serve for 4 years.
Because no candidate was able to receive at least 175 votes, which is the absolute majority of the 348 Court of Cassation members, in the first 27 rounds of the election, the 28th round of voting was held.
As a result of the voting, Mehmet Akarca received 102 votes, 3rd Civil Chamber President Ömer Kerkez received 113 votes, and 3rd Criminal Chamber President Muhsin Şentürk received 103 votes. While participation in the election was recorded as 321, 3 votes were deemed invalid.
Due to the failure to achieve an absolute majority, the election will continue tomorrow with the 29th round of voting.
An absolute majority of the total number of members is required to be present in the elections.
