Notable appointment for former AKP-era governor Yiğitbaşı: Martyr's family had been manhandled

The allegation of intervention during a program for families of martyrs during the governorship of Kübra Güran Yiğitbaşı, who has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Interior, has returned to the agenda; the file opened upon complaint had been closed without action.

According to the report by Sözcü, Yiğitbaşı's name was associated with an alleged intervention during an iftar program organized for families of martyrs in 2025.

On March 18, 2025, MHP Afyonkarahisar Deputy Mehmet Taytak also attended a program organized by the Afyonkarahisar Governorship as part of the "March 18 Martyrs' Commemoration Day." During the program, Süleyman Üye, the father of Infantry Specialist Sergeant Kerim Üye, who was martyred in an IED explosion in Bingöl in 2016, reacted to Taytak.

Expressing his reaction with the words, "My son was martyred in the mountains of Bingöl, I do not grant him my blessing," Üye criticized the MHP's stance regarding the İmralı process.

As the reactions continued, the bodyguards of the then-Governor Yiğitbaşı intervened, and allegations that the martyr's father and some families were manhandled caused a wide stir in public opinion. Following the intervention, some relatives of martyrs supported Üye and left the hall.

After the incident, the martyr's family filed a criminal complaint against the governor's close protection officers; as a result of the investigation conducted by the Afyonkarahisar Governorship, it was decided to close the file on the grounds that a police officer did not commit the alleged crimes.

Following Yiğitbaşı's appointment as deputy minister, the incident in question and the process regarding the complaint filed against her have become a subject of debate once again.
