Notable decision at the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ): Plot victim and Kardak hero Ercan Kireçtepe retired

Supreme Military Council decisions have resulted in the promotion of 23 generals and admirals to the next rank, and 77 colonels to the rank of general or admiral, effective August 30, 2024.

At the 2024 Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting held at the Presidential Complex under the chairmanship of President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the status of generals/admirals and colonels in the Turkish Armed Forces regarding promotions, extensions of duty, and retirements due to lack of cadre were discussed and finalized with President Erdoğan's approval.

During the meeting, the "generals and admirals retired due to lack of cadre after completing their normal waiting period" were determined.

KARDAK HERO RETIRED

It was noted that the list of YAŞ decisions included Rear Admiral Ercan Kireçtepe, a SAT Commander, a hero of the Kardak crisis, and a victim of a judicial plot who was acquitted after spending 3.5 years in prison. 

On January 31, 1996, while holding the rank of first lieutenant, Kireçtepe paid out of his own pocket to fill the empty fuel tank of the Zodiac boat that would travel to the Kardak islets, which had been occupied by the Greeks, and he was the one who lowered the Greek flag on the island and raised our flag.
