Nursing home prices skyrocket: Will the elderly be left on the streets?

CHP Deputy Chair Aylin Nazlıaka reacted to the exorbitant hikes in the monthly fees for nursing homes and elderly care and rehabilitation centers.

Following the price increases in nursing homes, the monthly fee for a double room rose from 3,100 Turkish Liras to 9,300 Turkish Liras per person. The price for single rooms increased from 3,500 Turkish Liras to 10,600 Turkish Liras.

'WILL THE ELDERLY BE LEFT ON THE STREETS'

In her statement, CHP's Nazlıaka addressed the exorbitant price hikes, saying, "These hikes have disturbed the peace of those in nursing homes. I am calling out to the Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, from here; how will our elderly, who are struggling to make ends meet with their pensions, pay for this increase? Our elderly are in revolt. Are those who cannot afford these exorbitant prices supposed to sleep on the streets?"

'TWO-FOLD INCREASE'

Referring to the complaints received from citizens staying in nursing homes and their families, Nazlıaka said, "We are receiving a deluge of complaints from all corners of Turkey. Nursing home residents are saying 'have some mercy.' The Ministry of Family and Social Services requested in an official letter dated August 29, 2024, that the increased tariff be implemented starting from September. Following the Ministry's instruction, the single room fee, which was 3,551 TL, rose to 10,652 TL. The per-person fee for a double room, which was 3,110 TL, increased to 9,331 TL. Furthermore, the suite room price for those staying with their spouses in nursing homes was hiked by 360 percent. With this hike, the fee, which was 4,834 TL, rose to 17,336 TL. The monthly fee per person for a double suite room also increased from 4,437 TL to 13,309 TL," she stated.
