Objection to releases in Sinan Ateş case rejected

A new development has occurred in the case opened following the death of former Ülkü Ocakları President Sinan Ateş, who was the victim of an assassination in an armed attack in Ankara on December 30, 2022. 

In the final hearing held, the court panel ruled for the acquittal of defendants Zekeriya Asarkaya, Hakan Saraç, Ufuk Köktürk, Mehmet Yüce, Osman Bayraktar, Caner Günay, Umut Ersoy, Çağlar Zorlu, Aytaç Ataç, and Erdem Karadeniz from the charges brought against them, and ordered that a report be filed with the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding defendant Günay for the crime of "aiding and abetting a criminal". Among these defendants, Çağlar Zorlu, who was the only one in custody, was also ordered to be released along with his acquittal. 

Sinan Ateş's mother, Saniye Ateş, and his sisters, Sevda Ateş Yörükoğlu and Selma Ateş Kazanç, had filed an objection through their lawyers against this decision rendered in the case heard at the Ankara 32nd High Criminal Court.

The file was sent by the Ankara 32nd High Criminal Court to a higher court for the objection to be adjudicated. According to the report in ANKA, the Ankara 33rd High Criminal Court rejected the objection, stating that ''there was no situation contrary to procedure and law in the release decisions, taking into account the time the defendants spent in detention.''
