Önder, who facilitated the meeting, explains: What happened during the Bahçeli-Demirtaş meeting

Devlet Bey is one of the most elegant people I have ever encountered in this political life when it comes to one-on-one human relations. In fact, people have witnessed this as well. However, human memory is prone to forgetfulness. Sir, when Ahmet Türk was taken to prison, he stated it openly; that was around 2016-17. He gathered the journalists there and said that Ahmet Bey should absolutely be tried without arrest. Indeed, he stood by this claim. As a matter of fact, Ahmet Abi had health problems, and he still does. He became a dynamo for him while coming to Imralı. Ahmet Bey began to be tried without arrest. He was a rival with whom we argued in the harshest political terms, yet he was someone who would shake hands with the MPs of the parties we founded under different names at every opportunity, ask how they were, and definitely call to offer condolences when they lost a loved one. However, we have not seen this nobility in many people other than Devlet Bey. When I entered prison myself, he had sent me a 'get well soon' message through Pervin Hanım. He had asked if there was anything he could do.

"I HAD SAID IT WOULD BE SOLVED WITH DEVLET BEY"

I had a different view on this matter. I had expressed it 11 years ago. The first resolution process had been shaken. At that time, I had said that this issue would be solved with Devlet Bey. Seriousness and sincerity are the two golden keys in this business. The work you are doing is a great work. Lives are at stake. If the whole world came together, it is impossible to bring back a life that is lost. Secondly, time has no imitation. It flows away. The destruction it leaves behind is one thing. Those who embark on such a great task must possess a seriousness and sincerity directly proportional to it. I said that in that sense. I also said it because I know Devlet Bey a little.

I TOLD BAHÇELİ, 'YOU HAVE DRIVEN THE NAIL INTO THE HIGHEST HEAVENS'

When Bahçeli made his move, we, along with Mr. Cevdet Yılmaz, Mr. Ahmet Türk, myself, Mr. Bekir Bozdağ, and Mr. Abdülhamit Gül, had mediated the peace of the Şenyaşar family. A dinner was to be held for this. We were in Parliament in a meeting regarding its format, place, and time. Suddenly, everything was stirred up. His bodyguards brought a phone to Cevdet Bey. They started looking for Bekir Bey. 'Sir, Mr. Bahçeli has made a speech,' they said. The transcripts arrived, we read them; it was a shocking speech. We read it many times, I watched the video. Following that, that meeting was interrupted. I went to my office with Ahmet Türk. 'We will meet another time, something big has developed right now,' we said.

We sat in my office, for the first time my assistant called and said, 'They are calling from Mr. Bahçeli's office, he wants to speak with you.' I said, 'Go ahead, connect it.' I put it on speakerphone, Ahmet Abi was also listening. He asked about my health, and I asked about his. 'Let us see peace, then may God take His trust,' I said. 'Would that be possible, sir? We will still dance the peace dance, do not think such things of yourself,' he said. 'You have driven the nail into the highest heavens, our height is not yet enough to evaluate it,' I said. They chatted with Ahmet Abi. We hung up mutually. Then we visited him.

It would be disrespectful for me to disclose this meeting before Devlet Bey does. I can convey the impressions. After the door closed, we watched not two members of different political parties, but two wise people—I am referring especially to Ahmet Abi and Devlet Bey—who had gathered in a village room, showing maximum respect and care for each other, having a conversation. That moment was a very important moment. We saw the background of the sloganized thoughts we heard on the podiums, the concerns, desires, rejections, what he demanded, what he imagined, his enthusiasm, and his determination there. All three of us left with respect. He also hosted and saw us off with great care and respect.

Let the listeners know as well. They think that very big things happened behind the scenes. There is an anecdote about the late Erbakan and Mr. Demirel. The MC coalition was about to collapse, the dessert was getting burnt. Eyes were locked on the meeting between Demirel and Erbakan Hoca. They went inside. They came out 1.5 hours later. Not a single statement was made. They were schoolmates. Later, the behind-the-scenes was told. When the late Mr. Erbakan entered, he said, 'Süleyman, I am so tired, let me lie down on this sofa and sleep for a while.' He slept for 1 hour. Especially people on television who know everything with a microphone in their hand produce many conspiracy theories. I would not attribute anything covered, secret, or bargained to ourselves or our interlocutors in anything we are involved in. Because we are not committing a crime. We have come together for a very sublime purpose. What are we going to hide? If even one life is at stake, I would be ashamed if I were involved in something like a bargain or a trade-off. I could not account for it to myself, my child, my friends, or this society. There are routine difficulties. We are talking about Turkey's biggest issue. The question of who Mr. Öcalan wants to meet with was conveyed. He had pointed to Pervin Hanım and me.

I had told Mr. Özgür Özel. I guess I could not explain it well enough. By the way, it is our duty to thank Mr. Özgür Özel for his approach, sensitivity, cautious reservations, and efforts. We have always seen him in a very sensitive and responsible approach on this issue. Without knowing that it would be named this way, I said this is a process, back-channel diplomacy always takes place. These are mechanisms that will be needed in times of necessity. Since the day I became an MP, my friends from the party have been inviting me, saying there should be a new process, the party has two memories, one of our friends is in prison, one is abroad. Let me send my greetings to Mr. Balüken and Mr. Demirtaş. My health was not suitable. We came and met. This cannot be called a process. A process is when two sides voluntarily announce something, that is called a process. I said these relations had been going on for 1 year, Mr. Özgür perceived it as a process, the burden and responsibility of that are mine.

In 2012, we carried out a process with him for about 3 years. Therefore, he is a person we know. He is a person whose capacity and dominance we know. A meeting ritual had formed between us. Normally, he shakes hands and shows a seat. 10 years had passed in between. We hugged. Normally he is not such a person, he shakes hands. We hugged, we sat down. He asked about my health, my prison period, and our friends. Normally we make a transfer. We explain the developments outside. Pervin Hanım starts, then I transfer. Then he says his own ideas. State officials also sit there. Their numbers change from time to time. This time he stopped us. 'We need to use our time efficiently, there are things I am curious about and want to ask, I am aware that you want to make a transfer, this time let me just speak, you can transfer those later,' he said. Except for small interventions, we did not get involved in the subject. He explained this; he explained the historical and sociological background of what he explained in his letter. That he wanted to do such a thing. He concluded by justifying why this is historically necessary, what its philosophical basis is, and where it leans historically.

Actually, Öcalan was at this point in the first resolution process as well. If we go into that, it will take long. Let me state a complaint; people are very heartless. A thousand and one kinds of slander about the first process being interrupted; I mean, a mother is watching this too. Without paying attention to the sensitivity of whether we or others would do such a thing over the lives of children, this is the tragedy of this country; the education problem is there, a private tutoring center is opened, you tie the problematic area to bread. There is a huge issue here with a historical background. While measures are developing and creating their own sectors, after a while, it gets tied to bread, from people who think they know everything with a microphone in their hand to arms smugglers. They get tied to this issue, it has become their bread. I guess we are getting old little by little, is that why; the human stomach cannot take it. Consider a people, they do not use the rights they were born with, they are not allowed to use them. Would a person fight if they saw the state as their own state? Without thinking about these, they place them into simplistic departments. There is no objecting, there is labeling. A comfortable area emerges and common sense disappears.

Conflict processes damage our hearts, eyes, and ears. The heart becomes calloused, the eye does not see, the ear does not hear. We went through such a time.

He did not talk about dissolution or anything else in the first meeting. Why he really felt this need. He brought a world, regional, and country analysis to the present day with its historicity and discussed it with us. Regarding Bahçeli's speech, he said, 'He is a serious person, what does he mean, I tried to understand this, in the end, I solved it, he is responsible, he has a conscience, and I placed a very high value on this.' He said, 'He saw the foresight of the fate, the bill, and the social cost that awaits us on an international and regional scale, and I placed a high value on this.'

Mr. Mesut Barzani also interestingly said, 'I thought for 3 days.' The AK Party probably thought about it too.

Mr. Bahçeli had said, let him come to Parliament and speak. He is not a person of the character to retreat from what he said. He always stood behind it. Mr. Öcalan said, 'They are pressuring him a lot, let us not make his job difficult, I will not come to Parliament, you are there, I will speak from here.' Did he have a request? No, and never! There is no condition for this business. There is no pre-condition or a condition afterwards. I say this with all my honor. I am also a peace worker who has dedicated his life to this cause. There are people who went under the ground for this cause, who stayed in dungeons for years, who lost their bread, their job, their health. If we weigh all the sensitivities of the country on the same scale. Kurds are also asking. We will build this peace together. We will look at each other's horizons. There is no other way. I assure you on my honor that there is no bargaining or condition for this business. I do not use this phrase easily either. Tomorrow, there is nothing under the sky that is not apparent.

So what is there? There are the requirements of the business. This step was taken. The call text was the result of a section. The call is perceived as the beginning of something. In one sense, it is the beginning, in another, it is the end of a part. From now on, technical, infrastructural, legal, and political instruments are needed. State officials have talked about this with Mr. Öcalan. These are not conditions of this process but requirements. The first stage was completed successfully. The first stage is more than 50 percent of this business. Let us say this was the most important part that is valuable, strategic, and vital. Everyone expressed a will. The PKK, Mr. Öcalan, and the countries that give power and strength expressed their will. The state and the government expressed their will on how they would respond. From now on, it is time to weave this process together. There is an inflation of calls around, saying 'I did this, you do this too.' We will talk about this too.

This business is a heavy responsibility. It is not child's play. These people are insane. If reason leaves a person, we call them crazy. If a person leaves reason, they are insane. These friends have abandoned reason by making such evaluations. This sentence is not a reservation sentence. It is not a condition sentence if this happens either. In terms of style and content, it is in a place apart from them. Let me say it more clearly and in the most obvious way; this letter was finalized as a result of certain discussions and agreements. You are building at least the next 100 years of Turkey. Every line should be weighed with a dirham. The architecture, content, excess, deficiency, style, and language of the writing. Since it did not proceed on the basis of anyone imposing on anyone, you must think about everything in detail, directly proportional to the responsibility of the effort being carried out. Mr. Öcalan did the same. It was discussed, there were objections, suggestions. What the nation missed or did not deal with is this; the sentence and spirit that mean this are already in the letter. I wish they would not bother to read it with the enthusiasm of text analysis. Where there is an emphasis on a democratic society, these sentences are its integral part. This is a long procedure. I say it with all clarity; Mr. Öcalan said I need to add this. 'Yes, there is no obstacle in terms of content,' they said. We agreed on the letter. State officials suggested. 'Ask one of our friends, let this also be included there as your thought.' That is, this does not mean a reservation or condition. I wonder if anyone would have produced any speculation over this paragraph if we had read the whole thing. Neither the government nor the state objects to that paragraph.

I swear on my honor, there is no hidden agenda. My honor is not a cheap honor either. I cannot speak on behalf of Binali Bey. What is the obstacle to talking about this? Let it be, there will be those who suggest this. There will be those who suggest more. If the country is divided, what is left for whom? Let me say it in Öcalan's words, 50 Gazas will be formed. We will all be ruined together. What if you win, what if he wins? Also, it is not the word of God. A human being brought this too. If it is needed, you use it, if not, another human being suggests something else. This country switched from the parliamentary system to the Presidential system? So what happened? One should not approach it with a 'hiss'.

Everyone is asking; 'what is the paradigm shift?' I would like to draw everyone's attention to Mr. Bahçeli's speech. In this country, for years, a Kurd could be everything, but could not be a Kurd. The highest position a person of Kurdish origin could reach. Until reaching this point, the name of the Kurd was used instead of an insult. The late Şerafettin Elçi told something like this. On Ali Kırca's program on Siyaset Meydanı, the word 'Kurd' had passed. Since that day, he had started watching it. They called each other, gave news. You can calculate the psychology of such a people from a tiny anecdote. First, it was said it does not exist, then it was said it is the Turk's holiday, then it was said you can celebrate it but you cannot write it with a 'w', write it with a 'v' for Nevruz. There was a governor, he lit a fire and jumped over it with the department heads. In 91-92, 92 people were targeted and shot, massacred to celebrate their holiday. Now, what has changed from there? In that speech, Mr. Bahçeli said this republic is the common republic of the Turk and the Kurd. Here is your paradigm shift. The President put his will into this. The political competition and struggle between us took place in a costly and harsh manner, unlike what is carried out with other opposition. It still continues partially. This is a paradigm shift. Recognizing one's existence is a very important thing. We are talking about the beginning of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

I and all my friends. All my friends who have labored in democratic Kurdish politics, who have come and gone, are not people who hold back their words. All of us have days of suffering in prison as much as our parliamentary terms. Instead of doing such pathological excavations, this country will not be divided, brother. This country is entrusted to all of us. It is entrusted to us the most. Because it is accused of us. We must keep this in the palm of our hand. On my own behalf, on behalf of my party, we are keeping it, we will keep it. I give my word for this here. For 17 years, this people has seen, watched, listened to me on the political stage, read my articles, watched my films. We have nothing to eat or drink but suffering. All of Turkey loved me, then half of them started to curse. This is the price we have to endure. You trust yourself, he who trusts his ablution has no doubt about his prayer. That we will not divide this country, we will not let it be divided. There is no such thing as 'you do this, I will do that.' We will do it as 'we.' We will discuss, some will come to life, some will not. Some do not have their day today. I welcome everyone, even those who make the most baseless claims and are in a conspiracy theory mindset, with maximum respect. Because we are sure of our thought and our direction. We walk with our hearts in our hands, come and contribute. Pain is not something to be allocated to just one place. Everyone has suffered pains that cannot be weighed on any scale. People's funerals remained in the streets. What can we do together? The difficult part has been done.

"THE PKK OBEYED, IT DECLARED"

Will the PKK obey? It obeyed. It declared. Academics and journalists who follow the PKK know that this can be considered the first letter written so clearly and in this style. In principle, it covers everyone. There is no condition or reservation for situations and structures that have originality. Let us talk and discuss together how this will be applied in the X field, let us reach a place. Öcalan's call is mainly to the PKK, of course. It is the main interlocutor. The YPG organization is also something done with inspiration from Öcalan. Also, look at its historicity. They were thrown into the slave market there. It is such a struggle. It has come to this day with a cost heavier than Turkey can be compared to. What is explanatory; in principle, we will now take this out of the line of arms. After this will is put forward, it ceases to be you and me, it becomes we. The program stands in the middle. I will get up from here and bring my chair next to yours. Stakeholders will come and sit. In the broadest sense, it has become our issue. If something is needed, we do it, if not, we do not insist. If we are convinced, we are convinced, if we can convince, we convince. The golden concept, within this, coercion, force, threat, and weapons are being removed. Let me tell the friends with microphones, instead of doing pathological things, there is a strategic and principled decision here.

Politics is done for people. What is at stake is the human being. The most sanction a politician can face is to be proven a liar. You cannot look at faces. Let us put this aside as a fact. Weapons are out of commission. It is valid for everyone; however, I insistently say. Maybe we will go to Rojava with Pervin Hanım. There may be problems, the gap in between may not coincide with the PKK and KCK. We are talking about the problem, we will solve it, we have to solve it. From this hour on, it is our common issue. We will focus on what is good for us.

This is the top of Imralı island. This is a monument. The grave behind it is the first grave where the late Menderes was buried. Pervin Hanım and I wanted to visit this place. We went. It was an emotional moment. Maybe we can transition from here to the terror, terrorist issue. I would like to lie in a grave like this. If possible, let my stone also mix with the soil. I would also like to complain to the state administration here. Now there is no gardening activity here, the graves have collapsed. Narcissus flowers have grown on their own. I said with all clarity, 'let us make three bouquets, let us take one to Mr. Erdoğan, one to Mr. Bahçeli, and one to our co-chairs.' I took it, then there are associations created by the grave flower. There might be a misunderstanding. We gave them to our co-chairs with Pervin Hanım, we shared the others and took them to our homes.

Without spoiling its naturalness, without burying it in concrete, care is needed here. In Islam, it is important to approach the funeral and the grave with kindness.

Celal Bayar was a committee member, with the paradigm of the day, he was a terrorist. Then he served as president of this country. Then he himself started to distinguish people as terrorists. The definition of terrorist changed. Subsequently, he was sentenced to death. Menderes and his two friends, the late ones, were hanged. One was Prime Minister, one was Minister of Finance, one was another minister. And they were executed as terrorists. They were elected ministers and prime ministers. Mr. Bayar was due to age. Mr. Bayar is among the founding fathers of this country. The Zeybeks and Efes, which have become wedding folklore in the Aegean today, were the terrorists and bandits of the Aegean. I am using it in quotation marks. Hundreds of them were hanged and shot.

I am also stuck on the phrase 'reputation restored.' If a person has a reputation, it cannot be restored. His grave was moved to Vatan Street. A friend of mine said, 'The graves on Vatan Street are no different from this.' Those who hanged Menderes were national heroes, the May 27th people. Then Madanoğlu and the people around him became terrorists on March 12th. The terrorists of this country never end.

Of course, there were those who experienced astonishment. All three leaders did brave things. The reason for this is the magnitude of the pain suffered. There were people who complained, asked questions, and tried to understand. But let me say something interesting. I do not know about the MHP community, but in our party, on the first day, before 24 hours passed, we are already relatives with our voters anyway. Ask any district administration or an MP, they will count them by heart. We are a large family. These doubts dissipated in the organization in 24 hours. We are now planning to hold public meetings in 120 locations. This is not just for our own voters. People will come, they will express their concerns, suggestions, and objections. We will try to be an answer to them, we will be inspired by them, if there are thoughts trapped in an unproductive area, we will try to enlighten them. Our work is just beginning now. DEM is actually starting to do its real work for the first time. We were a party of peace and negotiation. Interested friends, the TBMM website is open, citizens can look at which subject this party has given a legislative proposal on, what its focus points are. Now there is a democratic space. Kurdish energy was not being backed up next to the energy of society at the moment.

We say law, constitution. For 50 years, the constitution of the Kurdish provinces has been the anti-terror law. If you cause a disturbance in a coffeehouse here, you are prosecuted for the crime of causing a disturbance. If you do something there, it is the anti-terror law. The constitution was not valid for us. I said something before about the Republic's inability to democratize. They even declared me a reactionary. That was the only thing I hadn't heard.

Öcalan is still and always strong over the PKK. Wherever there is under the sky. He is decisive. There is no command and control mechanism there. These issues are discussed there. There is no salaried staff. People have come for the sake of their troubles and objections and have entered the process. Discussing is one thing, being decisive, being able to form its perspective and theory, the power and capacity are in Öcalan. The organization announced this to the public with a letter that did not contain any conditional mood before 24 hours passed.

Başak Hanım had an illness, it was a serious illness. In a sense, it was something vital. The doctors decided on a major operation. It is a right granted to all prisoners. In this framework, the lawyers of Mr. Demirtaş, our president, applied to the Ministry of Justice. Pervin Hanım and I intervened to speed up the process. It was presented to the President. He showed sensitivity. On the morning of that night, around 09.00, they had Mr. Demirtaş ready at the hospital where the surgery would be performed. Until the surgery, he gave morale to his wife, the lady. We also gave morale to both of them with Pervin Hanım. We sent him to surgery with high morale. I thank all the doctors. The physicians and all the staff on that floor mobilized. We, as the Demirtaş family and us, thank them all. The security guards who accompanied us acted very elegantly and sensitively. The surgery was successful. A few more procedures will be done after the surgery. We believe and trust that Başak Hanım is one of the strongest female friends and comrades we know. She will overcome this too.

HE EXPLAINED THE DETAILS OF THE BAHÇELİ AND DEMİRTAŞ MEETING

At that moment, Mr. Bahçeli called me. He had heard that Mr. Demirtaş's wife had been brought to his side. When he had surgery before, Mr. Demirtaş had conveyed a get-well message to him through me. We had conveyed both his own get-well wishes and Selahattin President's wishes to him. He was very happy, he thanked us very much. When he heard, he called, a very sincere short conversation took place, Mr. Bahçeli wished for healing. We put my phone on speakerphone. He wished healing to Başak Hanım, he showed the nobility of asking Selahattin Bey if there was any need. Medically and hospital-like something. I hope good days and beautiful days will come, take care of your health, he said. Selahattin Bey wished the same things. Pervin Hanım and I, together with the lawyers, waited until Başak Hanım's results came. Around 10 in the evening, we saw Selahattin Bey off to prison again. This is on a human dimension. Neither Mr. Bahçeli nor Mr. Demirtaş would condescend to talk about the agenda there. Mr. Demirtaş has been on this line in prison and outside since the process started. He is one of our most experienced comrades among us. Throughout the process, we constantly received suggestions, notes, warnings, and things we should pay attention to from him through his lawyers to the President, Mr. Bahçeli, our party, Pervin Hanım, and me. He had messages to the President, Mr. Bahçeli, and Mr. Öcalan. We conveyed and transferred them.

We have such noble friends. When peace is at stake, people who have paid the greatest price put their personal things aside. He lost his father while he was in prison. He has been in prison for 8.5 years. His mother had a traffic accident, she returned from death. No one promised us heaven or tenders for those who will do politics in DEM, HDP, BBP.

In terms of time, momentum, and sincerity, it was very shocking and a turning point in Turkey's own history. We are now talking about the next 100 years. The President giving his will, if these had not happened, if I had been talking to you today, we would have been talking about hundreds of disruptive areas. They existed yesterday, they exist today too. But today we have hope and a foundation.

They chat more with Ahmet Bey. Ahmet Abi does not use a phone much, I gave his nephew's phone number. There is no secret or mystery in the middle. It is a matter of two regards and one heart. Asking about each other's well-being. We are under the same sun. People say 'may your rights be halal' to the mosque congregation. There is a right to a 'hello.' Our people should not look for a hidden agenda. An era is changing. Many understandings will be sidelined. They should not think as if they are a side, we will walk arm in arm and look at each other's horizons. Those are the days.

Last time there was no precedent we could lean on. Post-conflict resolution processes in the world are the most difficult jobs in the world. There is no book for it, but we have statistics in our hands. The rate of those finalized with peace was 16 percent. The literature on this subject has been created based on statistics. For example, if one of the parties in this process goes to the language of victory or defeat, it does not become a success. This is a statistical fact. When one of the parties concentrates too much power, the end is not good. If both sides do not consider their existence, honor, and dignity as entrusted to themselves, it does not work. Process equals crisis. More open than yesterday, more protected than yesterday. There is a very clear expression of will. I say there is no condition, everyone prefers to interpret this as they understand it. When I say there is no condition, it should not mean there is no need. This business has many requirements. The valuable aspect that distinguishes it from the other process is this. Up to this point, it was you and us. From this point on, we are all together. It cannot be otherwise. The persuasion of the Kurdish street is not behind the Turkish street. I use the street metaphorically. Saying that the one who knows owes the one who does not know, we will pour out. What we tell will be the new peace ambassadors.

I am a peace worker. My friends describe it this way too. Our job is to keep cotton and fire away from each other. Because they will burn when they come together. If necessary, we make our own bodies a barrier, we did. There were those who burned for this cause. We will keep cotton and fire as far away from each other as possible. We will make a house out of rock and a dress out of cotton. Everything will be used for its own purpose and channel. The state is not a homogeneous structure, if we refer to Marx, it is an abstract thing. Actually, it is sabotaged on certain channels every night. This is a very long conversation. Let no one swing around aimlessly as if we are not aware of something. Knowingly or unknowingly, they sabotage it with their ignorance. A lot of unqualified people who have no skill other than hostility towards the Kurd act as if they are the wise men of this business and pass judgment. But we will explain it to them too. This means sabotaging this process in practice.

"OUR CONCERN IS NOT THE HEADLINE BUT THE LIVELIHOOD RIGHT NOW"

There are many practices like trustees and arrests. Things that strain the process. Now that this will has emerged, the democratic space will expand like this. It is not a condition, but if you do not develop the democratic space, this peace will not flourish. We must start discussing the business from this aspect now. Objection is also a contribution. This is not a 'hello cello' objection.

First of all, we will pay attention to the language. Our concern is not the headline but the livelihood right now. There will be no conflict, weapons will be out of commission. When there are conditions that strain this, we will pull our bodies, energy, intelligence, and accumulation as a barrier in front of it. This is everyone's duty. The state should also mobilize for these persuasion efforts. Look, I am not speaking with the language of polemics. The state should mobilize all its resources to produce this consent. We must mobilize. I am talking about something very principled, no universal right can be taken hostage or kept under pressure for any reason. Nothing that people are born with can be taken with anything. Peace academics, decree laws, there are many problematic areas. The total solution to this is to expand the democratic space. The organization declared itself. Of course, I have certain thoughts. Seeing the speculation area, protecting this process is our duty. Let us lock onto the target, let us look at the horizon. On the horizon, there is the revival of 1000 years of brotherhood.
