Only A Spor remained in the stadium: Levent Tüzemen's 'Atatürk' defense: 'I am the grandson of a martyr'
The Super Cup final, which was planned to be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was canceled after Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray were prevented from taking the field with an Atatürk banner. However, despite the cancellation decision, A Spor continued to broadcast from the stadium while waiting for an "official statement." While reactions poured in against presenters Gürcan Bilgiç and Levent Tüzemen, Tüzemen offered a defense centered on "Atatürk."
The Super Cup final, which was planned to be played in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was canceled after Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray were prevented from taking the field with an Atatürk banner.
While only A Spor remained in the stadium, many social media users reacted to presenters Levent Tüzemen and Gürcan Bilgiç.
"ATATÜRK PUT AN END TO THE SITUATION"
A Spor commentator Gürcan Bilgiç made the first statement, criticizing the Saudi Arabian authorities and saying the following:
“Everything was going well until the last moment for the Super Cup derby to be played in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. At the security meeting held in the morning, Saudi authorities did not grant permission for the banner featuring Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s quote 'Peace at home, peace in the world' or for the Atatürk references on the jerseys the players were to wear during warm-ups. Both our clubs and the Turkish Football Federation took a very clear stance against this attitude.
A relentless struggle began with the organizers, and in the end, the country's red line; Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, put an end to the situation. In the 100th year of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of Turkey, is the most important value of the people of this country. Others may think what they want. They cannot tell us or Turkey's two great clubs, which are older than the Republic, where to stand. Therefore, the Super Cup match created a meaningful day where our values were once again exalted. Let them not play.”
"I AM THE GRANDSON OF ATATÜRK'S COMRADE-IN-ARMS"
A Spor commentator Levent Tüzemen, who was the target of reactions due to his comments during the pre-match broadcast, made a statement defending himself. According to the news in Sabah, Tüzemen's statement is as follows:
“I condemn the mentality that tried to lynch me and Gürcan Bilgiç on social media before an official statement was made. Atatürk is my red line as well. I will meet with those who insulted me in court. I am proud to be Turkish. All of Atatürk's values are my values. I am the grandson of Major Hilmi Tüzemen, a Battalion Commander and comrade-in-arms of Atatürk, who was martyred in Sakarya for the sake of this country.”
The stadium lights were turned off while Tüzemen and Bilgiç were waiting for a statement.
