Onur Yaser Can case starts from scratch after 14 years

A new development has occurred in the case concerning Onur Yaser Can, who died by suicide shortly after being detained in Istanbul in 2010.

Onur Yaser Can had been subjected to strip searches and torture while in custody before taking his own life. The decision of non-prosecution issued at the time regarding the narcotics police officers was overturned 14 years later by the Istanbul 8th Criminal Court of Peace.

It has been learned that an investigation will be launched against the police officers for the crime of torture.

WHAT HAPPENED?

28-year-old Onur Yaser Can was detained by Narcotics Branch teams in Istanbul on June 2, 2010, on the grounds that he had purchased cannabis.

However, according to his family and lawyers, his relatives were not notified of this situation, and he was not provided with a lawyer while his statement was being taken.

Can, who was subjected to strip searches and torture in the detention center, was not given the reports he was made to sign during his interrogation.

According to his family and lawyers, Can was placed under surveillance after leaving the detention center.

A day later, he was called back for questioning by the Narcotics Branch.

He consulted a lawyer and wanted to obtain the statements he had given, but the statements were not provided to him.

Shortly after, he was called for a third time for questioning on the grounds that his signature was missing.

On the evening of the day he was sought, June 23, 2010, he jumped from his apartment building and lost his life.

His family, who were in another city, state that "Can called them that day, said he was in trouble, that he could not explain it over the phone, and asked them to come to Istanbul."

In a half-finished note that emerged after his death, it was revealed that he wrote he was "stripped completely naked in custody, made to wait in a squatting position, slapped, forced to listen to the voice of a person begging the police, and asked to act as an informant."
