Operation in Istanbul ahead of May 1: Detention warrants issued
In operations carried out in Istanbul ahead of the May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day demonstrations, a large number of people, including members of various leftist and socialist organizations, were detained.
In Istanbul, police teams conducted simultaneous operations at many addresses in the early hours of the morning ahead of the May 1 Labor and Solidarity Day events. It was stated that the raids specifically targeted active members of various political parties and civil society platforms.
It was noted that among those detained by security teams were members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP), the Socialist Solidarity Platform (SODAP), the Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP), as well as the Student Solidarity and Student Initiative. The operations in question were carried out as part of security measures ahead of the actions planned for May 1.
REACTION TO OPERATIONS FROM DEM PARTY
A statement came from the DEM Party regarding the detention procedures. The statement included the following: "This morning, ahead of May 1, many of our friends were detained in operations carried out against leftist and socialist groups, including our component parties ESP, SODAP, and SYKP, as well as the Student Solidarity, Student Initiative, Partizan, the Federation of Socialist Assemblies, and the People's Law Office."
The DEM Party also shared the following views regarding the events:
"We do not accept such interventions aimed at narrowing the space for democratic politics. Reintroducing policies of pressure and intimidation, which have been tried many times before but yielded no results, will produce no outcome other than deepening social tensions.
In such a period when the Peace and Democratic Society Process is ongoing and democratic values need to be strengthened, insisting on such operations is unacceptable. Pressures on freedom of expression and political activities harm democracy and make the construction of social peace difficult. The path to a real solution does not lie in policies of pressure and detention, but in ensuring an open, transparent, and inclusive dialogue environment. Attacks and interventions against democratic politics must now come to an end."
