Orkun Özeller recounts his time in prison: 'This place feels like a five-star hotel to me'

Retired Colonel Orkun Özeller, who was threatened by the Ülkü Ocakları (Grey Wolves) following his criticism of MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli—the architect of the new 'solution process'—and subsequently arrested after a complaint by Bahçeli, described his time in prison by saying, "I drank water from a bowl with a bottom completely yellowed by grime; it doesn't affect me. This place feels like a five-star hotel to me."

Orkun Özeller recounts his time in prison: 'This place feels like a five-star hotel to me'

Retired Colonel Orkun Özeller had criticized MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, the architect of the new 'solution process' dubbed 'Terror-Free Turkey,' and had clearly expressed his stance against the process.

Following open threats from the Ülkü Ocakları, MHP leader Bahçeli filed a criminal complaint against Özeller.

Orkun Özeller, who was detained on charges of insult and inciting the public to hatred and hostility, was arrested and sent to prison.

Speaking to Cumhuriyet, Özeller stated that he spent his first day at the Ordu E-Type Closed Penal Institution in the same ward as common criminals, but noted that this was not a problem for him at all.

Özeller said, "I drank water from a bowl with a bottom completely yellowed by grime. However, it does not affect me. I have lived on mountains and hills. This place feels like a five-star hotel to me."

Stating, "They wanted to silence one Orkun, but now all of Turkey is talking," Özeller added, "Let those who want to ruin me know that I feel even stronger. If something is going to change, I am willing to stay here. The Turkish nation will not accept this imposed process."
