The Sındırgı district of Balıkesir continues to make headlines due to the earthquakes it has been experiencing. Övgün Ahmet Ercan comments on the 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Sındırgı: 'It has gone wild'; 'If a major earthquake occurs'

As Balıkesir has continued to shake for months, the relentless earthquakes are causing citizens' fears to grow even further.

While the statements from experts suggesting that the earthquakes could shift to different points are occupying the agenda alongside the newly developing tremors, the comments of Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan regarding Sındırgı, which was shaken by numerous earthquakes throughout the day, have drawn attention.

Övgün Ahmet Ercan used the following expressions:

THE SINDIRGI FAULT HAS GONE WILD

Today, there were three aftershocks on the Sındırgı fault, with magnitudes of M 4.7, M 4.8, and, 10 minutes ago, M 4.9, which are progressively growing. While the earthquakes on October 27 occurred in the southeastern section, this time the sequential aftershocks are surprisingly developing towards the northwest, that is, in the direction of Balıkesir.

According to the science of geophysics, it is not possible to say whether a major earthquake will follow these aftershocks. If it does occur, I do not expect it to exceed M 6.2.

After the two previous M 6.1 earthquakes, if such a major earthquake happens again, the rate of destruction in houses in Sındırgı will increase significantly.

I would like to state that one should not enter houses that have not received engineering services, and that especially houses with moderate or minor damage are not safe to live in. The damaged areas in Sındırgı should be relocated by the state to the Düvertepe area in the northeast as soon as possible.

Please let science be your guide so that no one dies in future earthquakes.
